Westerns can be a tough nut to crack, but Hostiles may be the finest example of the genre since "Unforgiven."

Most powerfully about what violence does to the soul: Joe is almost dead to the world, and to himself. Not quite, though. This harshly beautiful film is equally about his regeneration during the course of a journey that amounts to a parable of humanity trying to climb out of the pit of endless slaughter and retribution.

Christian Bale's performance was excellent as was Rosamund Pike's. This is one of my favorite movies. We feel for the vulnerable Pike character and are really rooting for the Bale character to guide her through the many travails of their journey. Some humor and insight into the human condition with an admirable portrait of Bale's courage, caring and integrity. The audience knows Bale not to be perfect, but feels affection for him because he is stretching his own limits to persevere in his rescue of the woman. It was fun to watch that kind of rugged heroism.

Like Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven," the underlying tension involves the protagonist's journey to regain his humanity. Hostiles, a hotbed of hostility.

This is a proudly traditional oater that travels down old trails with new sadism, as though the Western genre only died off because the movies weren’t cruel enough.

Like Cooper’s Rust Belt faux-noir "Out Of The Furnace," it’s an exercise in strained seriousness, the potential ironies and dramatic tensions lost in a repetitive, episodic, and politically vapid narrative.

Scott Cooper directs Hostiles with an eye for quote-unquote “greatness” but the actual material simply isn’t deep enough to justify the solemn presentation. It’s not entertaining, it’s not illuminating, it’s not even complicated. It’s mostly just a bummer.

This makes Hostiles something of a slog, but a movie-literate slog containing some impressive scenes.

Recently I've been reading and watching documentaries about the Indian Wars. That entire episode in history can only be described as bitterly tragic and shockingly unavoidable. This film captures the madness of it all and the bewilderment that must have been felt on both sides incredibly well. I really did not expect to encounter a film that portrays what I've been learning in such a powerful and unforgettable way.

Fancied a horror so after reading the synopsis of this 2017 film which I'd never heard of, thought why not. Basically the film is set it to time lines, before and after and you know at some point they will converge but your never entirety sure until........ then it all falls into place. Strange film because of the 2 time lines, one a love story and the other a fight for survival, but the love story story for me was far from realistic but in the context of the underlying message carried by both story lines both acted as a way to get this message across. In out lives we may have to face our own monsters, real or events which we may not want to face but we know we have to do so, this film with the 2 story lines uses both real monsters and the monsters we may have to face in real life and joins then up in a way which made for a rather enjoyable watch. Rating 6 out of 10.

This movie feels a bit empty(?), I don't know, there isn't that much going on, but not in a slow-burn or a "chill-and-enjoy-the-ride" kind of way, it feels more like a drag, even if the actors play their roles incredibly well. It's a good drama/western still, I just wished that there would've been less dragging out of screen-time.
