The low-budget effort from Vancouver writer-director Scooter Corkle is earnest and methodical, with a tone-setting murkiness to it.

Hollow in the Land traffics in familiar rural thriller territory, but it features an excellent performance from its lead actress and a strong atmosphere of moody tension courtesy of its writer/director.

Like “Winter’s Bone,” the film is at its best when it follows its heroine closely, letting the audience understand more about her life with each step closer to danger.

Alison closely resembles Jennifer Lawrence’s character in “Winter’s Bone,” another self-sufficient young woman whose family and community turn against her. This movie is not as tense, but it gets close thanks to Ms. Agron’s resolute performance and the movie’s hostile small town setting.

The stench of needlessly convoluted derivativeness lingers throughout this flick.

Hollow in the Land is a well thought-out, gritty mystery thriller that finds itself supported by a richly layered narrative. While the story can sometimes get confusing and the lack of score is evident, the overall tone and atmosphere created by its stunning cinematography and sharp direction paired with some humanizing performances make this story hit its mark in the end. This film is the Canadian Winter’s Bone meets Prisoners.

OK. Good photography with awesome landscapes—the director filmed this one in his town—but the movie gets a little long and although at the beginning you are intrigued at the end you just want the movie to end.
