What God’s Time affords us, as few Hollywood movies do anymore, are performances that rely on sustained craft and emotion, an ability to mesmerize the camera and justify why it isn’t cutting away.

Antebi sets his own tone and masters it. The movie has the rush and the desperation of a fresh start.

Antebi resists the temptation to supply a simple, idealistic solution to achieving sobriety, an ongoing process that takes time and effort. Instead, he untangles the struggles of addiction and the road to recovery with a dose of levity and absurdity. He thus renders it easier for the viewer to latch onto the high-energy, albeit overly confident cinematic machine that is God’s Time.

A brilliant conceit sets up a cutesy, just-clever-enough New York comedy in God’s Time, a tale of twelve steps and an addict with a grudge and a gun.

The three principal actors, particularly Sierra, are appealing. But the story is thin, and the jokes are more cute than funny.

While there isn't enough to love about the film itself, there's enough from Antebi and Caribel’s stunning performance to keep God’s Time lively, making it a memorable feature debut for both director and star.

God’s Time has an endearingly scrappy vibe and a talented cast filled with unfamiliar faces. But it also feels cobbled together, as though Antebi had multiple ideas for how to approach this material.
