Chan maintains his dexterous footing whether choreographing the colorful large-scale battle sequences or the stripped-down, hand-to-hand matchups that boil the conflict down to its most basic — and personal — essence.

The athleticism on display shames much of Western action cinema’s quick-cut hand-to-hand editing, and the final swordfight between Qi and Japanese general Kumasawa (Shaw Brothers mainstay Yasuaki Kurata) ranks as high as any in recent memory.

Watched Mar 29, 2018 Matt Kerr’s review published on Letterboxd :
This film more than makes up for some slightly-boring melodrama in the middle by having some of the best battle scenes and action sequences I have seen in a long time, particularly towards the last hour or so of the film. There is a lot to praise here, including some pretty memorable performances from many of the lead cast, and I'm a total **** for battle scenes that put an emphasis on strategy and tactics. If what I have said sounds up your street you should check this one out!

As the wily leader of the Japanese forces, grizzled Kurata Yasuaki has more presence than Zhao, who’s bland in non-action sequences. But Zhao’s ability to deliver dialogue is less crucial than his skill at leading hundreds of extras through elegantly choreographed, sumptuously photographed chaos.

Competent on all fronts but never dazzling, it should please genre devotees.

What a waste of a name. If there is one good thing the Chinese are good at it would be stealing and copyright infringement. This is a horrible waste of the user name God of War. I watched this expecting just that, Kratos and his anger ready to strike. You know what I got? This bad movie. The movie is so boring. This name needs to be revoked because God of War is not a franchise to screw with.
