You're going out with a touch of class: a slam-bang finale in 3-D -- make that Freddyvision; a gaggle of one-liners directed at the final crop of victims and a few in-jokes; some wonderfully bizarre dream sequences; and the possibility that while Freddy may be gone, some of his progeny may live on (we can say no more).

Mr. Englund, playing the Halloween favorite whom audiences love to hate, now delivers lines like this with the broadness of a latter-day Jimmy Durante. But he sustains Freddy's peculiar charm even when appearing without ghastly makeup in scenes of Freddy's early years.

Freddy's Dead is fan fare, with little to offer those who aren't already Freddy freaks. [16 Sept 1991, p.5D]

It’s disappointingly ho-hum, without the spectacular — and often very funny — special effects that have become the hallmark of this series.

"We're in Twin Peaks here," says the only surviving teenager in town. It's a lame attempt to create class by association. Unlike David Lynch's kinky series, the creators of Freddy's Dead couldn't care less about the movie's interchangeable characters. The actors are often hard to tell apart; some are just worse than others. [14 Sept 1991, p.C5]

A proverbial whimper of a finale, Freddy's Dead, the sixth in the series, feels like the product of people who have no vested interest in keeping their franchise alive...You notice almost immediately how underpopulated the movie feels--by ideas, by special effects, even by phobic young cast members waiting to fall asleep and be slaughtered.

It's even worse than you thought it might be.

The opening is crazy, lots of fun! Did the filmmakers just watch Children of the Corn (1984) before making this? That ****. This has easily the best Johnny Depp cameo ever. There are so many good moments in the dream world although it gets a bit stupid sometimes. This is entertaining but not scary, they chose fun over fear and again, I’m fine with that. The Freddy makeup looks more like a mask than before, it could have done with ooze or blood or something to make it look less dry. What the heck was that explosion about at the end. If you weren’t watching in 3D (and I wasn’t) then it looked utterly terrible. Thankfully the majority of the film was good and a satisfying conclusion. Shame that the 3D section wasn’t in 3D.

New Line chose to end the Freddy saga with Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, written by Michael DeLuca and directed by Rachel Talalay, providing a definitive conclusion while exploring the killer’s origins. Freddy adopts a more comedic tone, yet the film still contains frightening moments, particularly through flashbacks of his pre-demon life. Creative kills, a star-studded guest cast, and a slightly lighter tone distinguish the film, making it fun and satisfying despite diverging from the darker style of previous installments.

CLICKBATE!!! I thought I was going to be watching a funny, campy nightmare on elm street film, where Freddy comes to the real world and rages havoc like it shows in the trailer. This was not it, every thing in the trailer happened in the first 5 minutes, the rest was a confusing boring mess, that delivered nothing that it Sayed DO NOT WAST YOUR TIME ON THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!

Dude this movie is great, it’s the complete antithesis of the original Nightmare On Elm Street as in it’s just a straight up comedy. Technically it’s bad I know but it’s so funny man, so self aware I can do nothing but have the best time. A lot of people hate it and I can see why but I’d say give it a go (keeping in mind you're not gonna watch a horror film of course). 3/10 Jay x
