A riveting sci-fi investigation into humankind's experiments with A.I. (with pages from Spike Jonze's Her and Stanley Kubrick's 2001), Ex Machina marks the extremely able directing debut of British writer Alex Garland, of the novels "The Beach" and "The Tesseract," and of the screenplays for Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" . . . and "Sunshine."

To dismiss Ex Machina as just another robot movie would be like calling the Grand Canyon a hole in the ground. It's one of the most original, smart, thought-provoking science fiction movies of recent years.

Immaculately written, with the tale unfolding like a slowly escalating nightmare. Devilish ending. Oscar Isaac plays beautifully against type, but the whole movie rests on Vikander's deceptive performance and she delivers in spades. Works both as a commentary on human advancement into robotics and as a nasty thriller that will leave the viewer breathless.

The only movie I know that understands the topic of AI well enough to make a coherent statement about it. Disturbing and fascinating, Ex Machina uses familiar ideas to tell a story that is without the usual naively misapplied humanism that we've gotten so used to receiving from mainstream sci-fi like Star Trek.

The director ensures this chamber piece of moral conundrums never seems too heavy-handed; his fluids camera roams through each room so that at no time does the theatrical set-up feel like a limitation.

Ex Machina is a clever film with one indelible performance from Isaac.

Isaac's brilliant take on this bearded, buzz-cut and barefoot Dr. Frankenstein is a tour de force of shock and awe. Ex Machina springs surprises that will haunt you for a good long time.

A chilly, yet engrossing drama, elevated beyond its four-people-locked-in-a-house framework by the eerie beauty of the production design and the thoughtful curiosity of Garland’s screenplay.

Ex Machina is arguably the best robot/AI film I have watched. It rightly portrays the philosophical and ethical aspects of creating a conscious AI.

Small cast, big ideas: that's usually a winning formula for me. At its core, Ex Machina stretches to reach a very challenging subject: where we draw the line between smart programming and true cognizance. The very idea of artificial intelligence opens up all manner of intriguing moral disputes, particularly when a mammoth global corporation is responsible, and many of those are touched, or maybe clubbed, as the plot slowly unfolds. It has a habit of oversimplifying at points, though, and frequently relaxes into a simple good vs. evil framework that I thought was far too easy for the theme's inherent complexities. Intense and thought-provoking at its best, it has a bad habit of hammering points that would be best treated with subtlety. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did.

if a machine dont have impression so it can not have compassion and in the end of the film we can see that confliction. the camera angle in most parts of the film was awful and it couldnt shif sense.

Imagine watching "Terminator 3", only with all the action scenes cut out. This about sums up this movie quite perfectly. You get all the philosophical depth of dumb action flick combined with all the action of melodrama. Where amazing "Her" (2013) movie showcased an interesting dynamic of man-machine relationships, here we have three totally cliched characters totally wasting screen time.
