Alejandro Jodorowsky’s movie has a strange, magical aura for cineastes.

Violent, visionary, vital.

One of the classic midnight movies of the Pink Flamingos -- Rocky Horror era, star-director Jodorowsky's metaphysical western about a violent wanderer plays like an especially gun-crazy Sergio Leone saga filtered through several layers of radical European/Latin American cinema and Christian and Buddhist mysticism. Zero cool in its day, it remains a striking film oddity. [16 Feb 2007, p.C4]

El Topo is a good deal more interesting and a good deal less hung up on its own pretensions than all my most intelligent friends had led me to believe.

Jodorowsky's is perhaps a prodigious, certainly a prodigal talent. What is most bothersome is not his chaotic cosmology but his coldness. He is so obsessed with allegorical meaning that El Topo misses any kind of full human resonance. It is instead a vivid if ultimately passionless passion play.
40
Jodorowsky plays with symbols and ideas and enigmas so promiscuously that the confusion may be mistaken for depth.

Unfortunately, Jodorowsky is no Bunuel -- nor a Leone, for that matter -- and El Topo’s bloody odyssey, involving endless heavily symbolic encounters with the bizarre and fantastic, expresses the eternal tug of war between the savage and the spiritual in human nature on the most obvious level and in the most ponderous fashion.

I have never watched a movie that had make me feel like I was losing my mind but then in the second half I finally understand everything and nothing at the same time. I am so happy to have watched this movie. What is a maddeningly beautiful film every movement everything happening has a purpose behind it I can feel it maybe it's because of that directors attachment to Theatre but watching this cinematic movie just feels different.I have just watched some of the directors commentary and everything makes sense when the directive tells me what is going on. I know it because sadly I have not really no too much about this kind of simpleism, but it's f** entertaining and I think it's amazing I think this movie is one of the more interesting trips. You can have.
