Dog attempts and mostly does a solid job walking a perilous line, being honest about and sympathetic to the concerns and inside jokes of veterans without licking boots or justifying endless war.

Movie isn’t perfect but all the important parts are. As someone that loves dogs, well all animals, and has been through some very hard times in life, this really hit home. Very emotional. No human can ever love you, be as loyal, and make you feel as loved as a furry friend. They saved my life too. God bless all the service dogs & their humans.

At heart, this is a film that just wants some good pats, and it’s willing to do whatever it takes to get them.

Dog is a bumpy, unpredictable ride because that’s what our heroes are on, but it’s all delivered with a gentle touch and authentic feeling that assure us that Briggs and Lulu are heading in the right direction.

There should be a special category for movies, like “Dog,” that are hard to enjoy but easy to take. They’re not entertainment. They’re more like a vague form of companionship. They aspire to little but demand nothing, and, if you like, they can keep you company. You can’t call that a good movie, but you’d have to be a creep to call it a bad movie.

The tonal imbalance and the mismanaged themes make for an extremely uncomfortable watch. However, Dog might find an audience, one that is not so bothered by the lack of depth, and who will tolerate the surface-level insight into the issues it barely touches upon.

Dog is an comedy-drama film starring Channing Tatum and directed by Tatum and Reid Carolin. The film follows Army Ranger Briggs (Tatum) who is assigned to drive Lulu, a Belgian Malinois military dog, from Washington state to her handler's funeral in Arizona. The story focuses on the bond and unlikely friendship that develops between the gruff soldier and the dog during their road trip adventure. Dog has the potential to be a heartwarming and feel-good story about the special connection between humans and their animal companions. Tatum and Carolin's previous film collaborations have been comedic in nature, so Dog seems to mark a shift toward more emotional, dramatic subject matter for the duo. The premise of an unconventional friendship between a soldier and a military dog has the potential to be deeply moving if handled well. The movie isn't bad, but is definitely more serious than the trailers would show. Channing Tatum also directs the movie well.

This movie was tough to rank, simply because of how much good, and how much bad there was in the movie. Although the comedy was not up to par, it did feel emotional in some degree and the characters were well designed. However, I would say ~35% of the movie was filler that contributed nothing and just felt like an empty excuse to make the movie longer. Some plot points also just felt unnecessary and contribute nothing to the actual purpose of the movie, to be a tearjerker with good comedy.
