Dog attempts and mostly does a solid job walking a perilous line, being honest about and sympathetic to the concerns and inside jokes of veterans without licking boots or justifying endless war.

Dog is uneven in tone and quality but shows promise in the way Tatum and Carolin approach the story with care and heart.

At heart, this is a film that just wants some good pats, and it’s willing to do whatever it takes to get them.

Dog is a bumpy, unpredictable ride because that’s what our heroes are on, but it’s all delivered with a gentle touch and authentic feeling that assure us that Briggs and Lulu are heading in the right direction.

There should be a special category for movies, like “Dog,” that are hard to enjoy but easy to take. They’re not entertainment. They’re more like a vague form of companionship. They aspire to little but demand nothing, and, if you like, they can keep you company. You can’t call that a good movie, but you’d have to be a creep to call it a bad movie.

The tonal imbalance and the mismanaged themes make for an extremely uncomfortable watch. However, Dog might find an audience, one that is not so bothered by the lack of depth, and who will tolerate the surface-level insight into the issues it barely touches upon.

The movie isn't bad, but is definitely more serious than the trailers would show. Channing Tatum also directs the movie well.

This movie was tough to rank, simply because of how much good, and how much bad there was in the movie. Although the comedy was not up to par, it did feel emotional in some degree and the characters were well designed. However, I would say ~35% of the movie was filler that contributed nothing and just felt like an empty excuse to make the movie longer. Some plot points also just felt unnecessary and contribute nothing to the actual purpose of the movie, to be a tearjerker with good comedy.

An extremely dull and uneventful hour and twenty minutes before some okay dog payoff scenes.
