Compadres

Director Enrique Begné, who helmed this year's winsome "Busco Novio Para mi Mujer," directs with an emphasis on action over comedy. Sometimes that feels misplaced; the stretches without laughs grow increasingly longer as the plot moves forward. But he keeps things enjoyably fast-paced, so it's hard to complain too much.

Compadres tries to be a lighthearted cross-border buddy film, and sometimes it succeeds. But consistency is a problem — it doesn’t hit those humorous high notes often enough, and when it’s not in the comedic groove, it’s muddy.

This lame effort represents international collaboration of the most mediocre kind.

This movie, which is what you’d call a god-awful mess.

Compadres feels less like an actual movie and more like a half-dozen movies thrown together, and absolutely nothing sticks.
