Film Threat
Kim Jee-woon’s film is smart and full of laughs but comes up against profound issues created by its gaming of reality.

This affectionate hoot hardly breaks new ground with its film-within-a-film structure, but the South Korean auteur attacks the material with such good cheer, populating the story with a collection of daffy dreamers, that it’s easy to root for these characters as they reshoot the ending of a picture some of them are convinced is this close to being a masterpiece.

It's far from perfect, but the production design of the film and the strong backbone of actors make Cobweb an entertaining film, though not a must-see.

The Film Stage
Whereas I Saw the Devil was relentlessly violent and mean-spirited, Cobweb has a softer heart, and fixates on sloppier ensemble staging and to-the-hilt acting performances to the detriment of Kim’s considerable skills with the camera, and his ability to manipulate audience attention in a quasi-Hitchcockian manner.

There’s a slack nature to the film that almost feels like it has to be an intentional experiment from a filmmaker who has been so precise and intricate with his work in the past. It’s as if Kim is testing himself to see if he could make a self-indulgent, unsubstantial lark of a comedy. He can. Sorta. Now let’s get back to the good stuff.

The New York Times
Cobweb, directed by Kim Jee-woon, mines the comically absurd reality that is filmmaking, at times with bouncy cinematic verve, at others somewhat aimlessly and a little too indulgently.

A film containing another film; a filmmaker referring to the trials of a filmmaker: it’s a movie of many layers, all of them garish and goofy, none of them great.

The Door of Desire That Can Neither Be Closed nor Crossed251028 (3.5)Who was it that opened this door? This door of desire that can neither be closed and halted, nor crossed without falling. We have no choice but to burn in the futility of being caught in a trap. This film is a deliciously crafted B-movie style delight that blends high-stakes drama with chaotic comedy. It follows Director Kim Yeol, a man haunted by the shadow of his late mentor, Director Shin Sang-ho (played by the ageless Jung Woo-sung, who looks younger than his disciple even in death). Yeol, dependent on antidepressants and recurring dreams of a new ending, is obsessed with re-shooting the finale of his film "Cobweb," even as he hides the secret that he stole his mentor's script, "Fiery Love," the night Shin died in a **** re-shooting process is a descent into madness under the strict censorship of the Yusin era. The cast is a colorful mess: Lee Min-ja, the haughty lead actress playing a vengeful daughter who is actually the chairman's secret child; Kang Ho-se, a trashy male lead who impregnates a rookie actress while promising marriage he never intends to keep; and Han Yu-rim, the rising star who tries to flee the set for her drama schedule but delivers genius-level acting once the camera rolls. Standing behind them is Shin Mi-do, the fierce successor of Shinseong Film, whose aggressive support for Yeol’s new female-centric narrative involves kidnapping and intoxicating a government censor, Park Ju-sa, to keep the production **** film shines in its meta-cinematic approach, using black-and-white cinematography and dubbed audio to evoke 1970s Korean cinema, while contrasting it with the modern, chaotic energy of the film set. From the "actor-gag" about film critics being "failed artists seeking revenge" to the hilarious moment where Mi-do attempts a stunt with terrible acting, the humor is sharp. The climax, a one-take fire scene reminiscent of "One Cut of the Dead," reaches a peak of absurdity when the crew forgets they’ve locked a government official in the burning set. While the ending of the film-within-a-film turns into an "Alien"-esque horror with giant man-eating spiders and "Parasyte"-style webbing, the real-world story reveals a bitter truth: Yeol’s career was built on a stolen script and a shared silence over a tragic fire. With top-tier performances and a stylish B-movie aesthetic, it’s a flavorful tribute to the obsession of filmmaking.

"Cobweb" tem essa pegada metalinguística (um filme dentro do filme) e funciona muito bem na sua ambientação, com uma direção segura e nível de atuação de excelência. O problema mesmo é o miolo (entre o início e o ótimo final), onde muitos dos conflitos parecem mal escritos, com situações que mais causam vergonha alheia e repulsa. A longa duração também não ajuda, mas vale a pena insistir, os últimos 30 minutos são sensacionais.
