Boogie is at times unpolished but it offers a compelling and sympathetic portrayal of the title character and avoids excessive melodrama or a too-facile ending.

Boogie tries to appreciate its own contradictions, and also to complicate the audience’s expectations. It positions Boogie as an underdog of the underrepresented, a potential breakout star in an arena where the odds are stacked against him. But it also resists the temptation to turn him into an easy emblem of success, while neatly sidestepping the feel-good uplift and predictable, reconciliatory outcomes that tend to hold sway in the sports-movie genre.

The sound effects are good. The presentation is good. But, the story lacks some tightness. but yes, it is worth watching.

Surprisingly, this is NOT a Rocky-style up-and-comer athlete story. This Chinese-American basketball player (Taylor Takahashi who’s actually Japanese) is already a stand out at his high school. This movie revolves around his hope for a college scholarship on his way to playing for the NBA. His greatest challenges are living up to his traditional parents’ expectations and winning the big game against a rival. This was written/directed by comic Eddie Huang (best known for Fresh off the Boat) and the lead is actually his teammate from a community league. Sadly, it shows. Although Takahashi is earnest (and too old to play a teen), his flatness belies his lack of experience, esp. against the actual actors. To make matters worse, the writing tackles all of the issues with a simplistic approach and the direction is flat. Overall, this feels like a bad TV drama.

It’s only in assuming that we care more about Boogie’s athletic journey than his interpersonal relationships that the film falls short.

The idea of a movie about an Asian-American basketball prospect is compelling enough, but Boogie is also saddled with the baggage of seemingly everything writer/director Eddie Huang thinks is cool. Some of it fits, some of it doesn’t, and lots of times his attempts at a fresh angle come off achingly corny.

Yes, it’s a coming-of-age story: If Boogie were fully evolved, woke and enlightened, there would be no "Boogie." But the film is just rough and unformed enough to suggest that Huang might still have some growing up to do as a filmmaker, too.

Boogie has some hops. But its all-around game could use a little work.

What is obvious is that Huang’s Boogie is a 90-minute aimless mess that sets back as much as it saves.

(Mauro Lanari) Youthful ethnic minorities who, in the grip of a lacerating ambivalence, a "mixture of covetousness and resentment" (Alison Willmore of Vulture), aspire to integration with the goals of the American nightmare while despising it.
