Not only does Ostroy contextualize her life outside of filmmaking, but he also centralizes Shelly’s steady and progressive growth from actress-for-hire to independent filmmaking force, noting how creative autonomy allowed her to develop her own projects but also slowed down the development time in-between movies as she scraped together financing.

Adrienne is a beautiful testament to the power of Adrienne Shelly and will hopefully inspire fans, new and old, to revisit her work. Andy Ostroy’s documentary certainly emphasizes the emotional and sentimental, but that intimacy bonds the audience to Shelly as a woman. Bring tissues.

It’s also a film made by her grieving husband. On paper, it shouldn’t work at all. It works measurably better on screen.

It isn’t polished and it isn’t focused, and at times there’s a rawness to its emotional exposure that left me feeling a little uncomfortable. But in those respects, it’s a wholly reasonable expression of the sort of grief that, even 14 years later, defies understanding.

Hi Andy, I hope you were doing OK. I am watching AdrianneI am watching Adrian at the moment. I guess it would be mundane for me to say the usual of how special she is in the Hal Hartley movies. He seem to capture her in the exact type of woman that she is. Really deep, very intelligent, beyond the idea of phGo well. Be safe.ysical beauty. I can write a comment on Metacritic, which I will, but I just want to say, and that you already probably know that you are one of the luckiest man alive to be able to win her heart. And that she obviously has an instinct. I'm the same type of person when I choose women, but I want you to know how rare these people are. It's with great respect to you that you won her. Go well. Be safe. Adrienne is one special woman. Why would anyone think to kill for money without knowing what they have? Why hang her? So sad. To kill is always the end of one's life, for both people. So sad. Worth watching for one of the most special women in the world. Watch Trust and The Unbelievable Truth, both films by Hal Hartley. Brilliant films.
