All movies are manipulative by default; the effectiveness of that manipulation is the more valid measurement to inspect. On that scale, A Man Called Ove is a morbidly funny and moving success.

Holm’s well-judged adaptation of the bestseller keeps the maudlin to a minimum and plays the black comedy just right. A strong contender for feel-good film of the year.

I've got no expectations that anyone else needs to give this movie a 10/10 rating. It's a bit schmaltzy and predictable in the way it tugs at the viewers heartstrings, but it worked on me. I knew nothing about what this movie would be when I decided to catch it at a recent film festival. Perhaps that's part of why it got to me so much. I was blindsided by how funny and sad it was. I was constantly crying or laughing or both. In this instance, I can't help but judge it based on how it affected me as a viewer. It was an emotional movie-going experience and I really loved it.

9.5/10 A touching and at the same time funny story about an evil old man. Realy good swedish movie, thas tells beautiful old man's story. Idea it's not realy new, but well submitted. Very pleasant and interesting main character to which you feel from the first minutes of the film. Minor characters are also interesting. The actor in the lead role fit perfectly. The only thing you can find fault with is flashbacks, they had some plot holes. Camera work is unremarkable, and editing in places is clumsy. But watching a movie does not spoil it at all. Who likes the genre of comedy drama, the film must really like!

It’s also overlong and sentimental. But it’s a vivid, warm and amusing portrait of a real man, someone whose life began in darkness, experienced the light of a great love and has collapsed into a pit of self-pity.

A Man Called Ove has some tear-jerking moments, but the film is so carefully designed — with long, circular takes that seem to surround the main characters at crucial fateful points — that technique often triumphs over sentimentality.

Incorporating fluid flashbacks and snippets of narration that refreshingly serve to enhance rather than distract, director-writer Hannes Holm maintains a gentle, lyrical flow while coaxing fine performances from a diverse cast.

It's emotionally manipulative, but its two leads find a core of humanity even in the most calculating plot machinations.

Good-hearted stuff, to be sure, but mainly of interest to lovers of cinematic comfort food.

Simple, feel good comedy. I love foreign movies to see how other people live and deal with everyday occurrences. Saw it at the Riverview. The audience clapped at the end of the movie.

Way too sentimental for me. Flashbacks are a pet peeve of mine, and this film feels like 40% flashback. I feel like there's a much darker, grittier version of this film that could be made that I might like more. I wish I'd read the book instead.

This is a fairly entertaining Swedish black comedy with good acting and a few laughs.

Ove is the title character from Frederik Backman’s novel. He's a typically grumpy old man who rigidly enforces his housing community's rules and continuously reminisces about his deceased wife. There are also flashbacks to formative moments from his youth and a few neighbors who manage to work their way into his heart. Yes, it's one of those films. The scenario and the character are about as original as the title (meaning not very), but it's well directed, nicely acted and sweetly told.

The film should actually be named an idiot named Ove. It's supposed to be about a grumpy old man with a good hart but for me it's hard to get involved in the events depicted when his aversion against the world around him mainly emerges from his own stupidity. From the first scene we get to know Ove as an idiot, when he insists on his rights as a customer in a flower shop in a way that everyone that has ever bought anything know is just plain idiocy. Ove is portrayed as man with knowledge about engines. In a scene when he is on a date with an attractive non-stupid woman (a very unpleausible date for Ove), he is asking her if she knows what the spark plugs do in a cars motor. She does not and Ove then says that they make the engine go round.... Which tells us that Ove hasn't got a clue about engines, nor does the director or the script writer. A not particularly funny, not very heart warming and as stated above, quite stupid film.
