Test Drive

Electronic Gaming Monthly
A very solid racing title that, if anything, ,is just a tad too short. [July 2002, p.120]
It's slick, colorful, challenging, well-rounded, has a soundtrack to die for and it allows you and a friend to waste more time playing "Pong" than either one would ever care to admit.

While the title of greatest racer ever is still secure with bigger names like "Gran Turismo 3" and "World Rally Championship," this Test Drive could still be the best in the series so far.

Game is at times fun, but flawed in some ways that really let it down. Namely, the car physics and handling. Brakes feel like they do nothing, and when you're flying towards a sharp turn at 120+ mph those are kinda important. AI opponents drive like you don't exist, causing lots of unneeded frustration as drivers slam you into walls. To add to this, the collision physics are very wonky. Cars feel like they both have next to no weight to them and are as heavy as a tank at the same time. Hitting anything, even stuff like traffic cones launches your car into the air or moves your car around a little, but at the same time, hitting an object will send it flying several feet, idk it's weird. The game has a neat Pong loading screen though, so +1 point for that. Honestly, just play Midnight Club 3.

AKA TD Overdrive: The Brotherhood Of Speed, this arcade road racer pre-empts NFS Underground with its stereotypical characters and rather lame backstory. It's actually reasonably fun to play but is routinely outshined in every department by the later Burnout games. Not bad though.

Nice looking game, fast and drives well (if you like arcade style racing), now why the low rating? It gets pretty much ruined by the extreme rubber band ai and, for my taste, also the set time limits between checkpoints. You can basically park for a while, turn slowly around the next corner, and all the competitors will wait for you there. Losing them when in the lead is just as tricky, so driving skills go out of the window. All of this could still be mindless fun as the traffic and tracks keep you on your toes, alas there are pretty strict time limits so a few crashes, some of them are just down to luck, can end the race for you. I found this frankly infuriating after a while. You do get Pong as loading screen though, so I give it an extra point for that.

Looks good and sounds great, but in a racing game to have the sensation of speed constantly interrupted is very damaging.

It can be really exciting - or really frustrating. It all depends on whether luck is with you. [July 2002, p.100]

The problem is that it's far too arcadelike for its own good, and it really only lends itself to short amounts of time spent playing.

Game Revolution
A mixed bag of intense and exciting racing action which suffers terribly from a total lack of extras and is beset by weak collision physics, bad camera angles and crappy load times.
