Less Pikmin, more Thickman. Avoid. [Aug 2011, p.91]

When all is said and done, Swarm is one of the few titles that can make frustrating, fun. It's certainly not a game for everyone, but if you can overlook some of the rough edges, there is a good time to be had. At 1200 MSP ($15), Swarm is on the pricier side for a downloadable title, so if you're on the fence, give the demo a try first. But if you've been jonesing for some good Lemmings-style action, this may be the closest you're going to get unless Sony decides to revive the Psygnosis classic one day.

It seems to me that the critics are being a little too harsh on this game. Sure it has its faults, but this is a solid download title for its price. Cool level design, and the scoring system allows you to continually improve on your best scores. Controls can be finicky at times, but nothing to fret over. Boss battles are intense and give the game a little bit of variety. The game is somewhat repetitive, but with the great visuals, interesting game-play mechanics, and clever scoring/multiplier system, it seems to overcome its small faults. Overall the game is a solid 8, but if you are a player who enjoys a good challenge, or someone who likes "high score" games where you replay levels to try and top yourself, this game is more like a 9 or 10. Hats off to Hothead for delivering a solid arcade title to the market.

When you combine engaging and unique gameplay with Swarm's pleasant (but dark) aesthetics and whimsical nature, what you have is a great downloadable game.

A great downloadable game with a balanced gameplay, good graphics and, most of all 50 funny Swarmites you can kill in the most unpredictable way. Ok, to kill them all is not your primary goal, but since you get also awarded, why not?

This pick-up-and-play title offers up more than enough challenge to keep you busy but enough charm and enjoyment to keep trying when hitting a brick wall. Though there's a high level of frustration in places, as levels take on the ridiculous difficulty of bullethell shmups, with practice and patience, you can master the swarm and have fun doing it.

Clever in oh-so-many ways and almost endlessly replayable but, the level of frustration on offer might pose a health risk to those with blood pressure problems.

A contradictory videogame premise that screams frustration from its opening stage, and continues in that vein thereafter. [Issue#71, p.103]
SummarySwarm lets the player take control of 50 utterly fearless Swarmites and drive them through an intense, entertaining and often suicidal battle for a greater good. Run, bash, huddle, boost, stack, jump, push and throw your way through gauntlets of death and destruction in an attempt to collect valuable DNA and ensure that at least one Swar... Read More
