When in full flow, Star Overdrive gives a great sense of speed and fun from its hoverboard dynamic. It's unfortunate, then, that any reason for the exploration is missing, with similar bland puzzling and the same rinse and repeat scavenging mechanic. With the exception of some fun boss battles and hoverboard mechanics, this one doesn't stick the landing.

Star Overdrive is a simple and fun adventure that mixes well-known elements with its own spices. It's fun, but it still reminds you of a lot of other games — and that can be quite tiring.

Overall, Star Overdrive is a game for the right moment. The game can be a blast to traverse with its hoverboard trick mechanics and can be extremely soothing if you want to explore, fight enemies, upgrade and customize your hoverboard and keytar, and solve the mystery of the story. At times, dungeons can feel quite empty and directionless, which does bring down the experience in those moments. However, considering that this is an indie game, this studio did a great job pulling off a game that captures many aspects of exploration and adventure of many of the greats before, while still executing a unique vision that feels like it has its own identity.

This Is just like Botw and Hi-Fi Rush had a baby! And the postman was Tony Hawk...
Love It. The music hit hard, the world Is beautifull and the surfboard is addictive.

It's actually quite okay, especially for the price. This game is a constant "I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's fun" feeling. The world is bizzare. The whole setting with the music and everything, I quite like it, it's Cyberpunk-ish, but also unique and consistent. The game is indeed pretty primitive, but it's more or less like playing BotW lite, if you want to play some sandboxy adventure, but not too vast, not too complex, this is it. A cheap and good, I would even say polished, game. Really nice. I like it. As I said, especially for the very low price.

Star Overdrive shines for its fun proposal and competent execution, which I applaud for its hoverboard and narrative. It ends up being a great choice for those who enjoy non-linear exploration with hints of mystery, puzzles and a touch of adrenaline. However, if you're looking for something with the same level of quality as Breath of the Wild, some things will end up disappointing here and show a lack of polish.

Star Horizon is an open-world thrill ride where rock and roll meets retro-futurism. Rip through alien dunes on your hoverboard, shred enemies with your keytar, and dive into synth-soaked dungeons that echo with the sound of rebellion. The familiarity of its gameplay mechanics mixed with inventive and dramatic play styles help define it as something exciting and fresh.

While it may seem derivative at times, Star Overdrive is a solid game. It has a cool central mechanic and takes big swings in how it delivers its world and gameplay. While not everything lands, it’s an impressive effort from a team of 10 people — one I think gamers should check out.

Star Overdrive has been a great surprise for me: the trailer looked cool, kind of mixing Zelda BOTW and Skate together, and my expectations were quite high, but I was glad that they didn't let me down. The gameplay feels very smooth, my favorite part - it goes almost without saying - is roaming around the desert dunes with the hoverboard and gaining as much speed as possible, but the surprise I was referring to is the combat: I was scared that I would have had a hard time enjoying it (since it's not my usual cup of tea), but playing has a very different feeling than seeing trailers and videos; it's smooth, kind of goofy in a good way, almost as if the game doesn't want to take yourself too seriously, and the powers are super cool.
As I imagined, a lot of work was put in the hoverboard: tons of upgrades, skins, resources to collect to make it faster, stronger, more powerful; you will invest time to improve it, and to maintain it as well, and it does get you attached to it in a way.
The movement is very accessible, but you'll need to get a grasp of how it works to make the most out of the experience - and your tools.
Honorable mention: giant worms surfing in and out of sand dunes.
Overall, it's a game that keeps you engaged, but doesn't punish you if you can only play it in your spare time.

Star Overdrive is an uneven but quite original experience. It shines brightly in those moments when we fly over the dunes or hills to the rhythm of music and when we explore some of its scenarios and solve its intricate puzzles. But it also disappoints for its obvious lack of content, some technical failures or unsatisfactory combats.

An uneven, but ambitious adventure. Caracal has taken ingredients from some key titles and genres, added a brilliant traversal mechanic and cooked up a chilled-out, sci-fi wasteland odyssey. The game's mysterious, drip-fed narrative will keep you intrigued, and every moment spent on the grav board is undeniably enjoyable. Although Cebete may feel overly familiar, its vibrant landscapes and hidden secrets still make it worth exploring.

Star Overdrive largely feels like a good demo of a great game. There are some really strong core elements like the hoverboard travel, the mysterious story, and the visual style, but these are equally countered by the negatives. The sandbox structure of Star Overdrive seems to work against it, only serving to hide the positives and make the lifeless map and combat stick out like a bit of green in its red and tan world.

Star Overdrive has a strong foundation with stylish hoverboard exploration and creative Keytar-based combat, but it falls short of its potential. The world feels empty, the protagonist lacks personality, and many creative ideas are confined to isolated segments. It’s a game with a great concept, but the execution doesn’t quite deliver.

I just finished my first run. The end is too much for me, something that I was anticipating but could not fully predict, and the entire story is built it so well that I wish it will be a sequel for this game. About the gameplay: Hoverboard is just cool and something new, worth the ticket only for that. Exploration is rewarding and relaxing, the puzzles you find around the map (Zelda Shrines) are very cool and pays respect to my brain without making me feel stupid or too smart, and they gave me a couple of very satisfying moments. Crafting is ok, you just need to trow everything you collect to get better pieces, I got what I believe is a end-game hoverboard after half of the story, because I enjoyed a lot the exploration. I feel that the best and most useful power of this game is given too far in the story (maybe because the game changes and becomes very easy with it). Combat is weird: nobody tells you that you have heavy attacks and comboes, air strikes and so on, you have to discover it (and makes the difference) but most important I used them in minor part anyway because the powers you unlock are so useful and well thought to damage and to increase the weapon damage, they are also very creative but I feel that i scratched the surface. Star Overdrive seems to be the first game of a 10 people team and needs to be praised (would be an 8.5 to me) because it is something fresh, but at the same time old school in a weird (right) way.

Worth it just for the dunes-worm fights alone. I love the hoverboard swooshing exploration that you cant see in any other game

Star Overdrive sets out to deliver a multifaceted sci-fi experience, merging open-world exploration, real-time combat, and narrative-driven progression. While the concept is ambitious, the execution reveals significant shortcomings. The hoverboard traversal system is fluid and stands out as a rare highlight, complemented by a well-produced, atmospheric soundtrack. However, these strengths are undermined by poorly balanced combat mechanics, shallow enemy AI, and a progression system that lacks meaningful player agency. The narrative, despite its initial intrigue, quickly becomes formulaic and predictable, offering little incentive to stay invested. Star Overdrive has potential, but in its current state, it feels more like a proof of concept than a polished product.

Star Overdrive is not perfect, far from it. But it is precisely in this imperfection that it shines. In a sea of generic games that stick to safe formulas, it stands out for trying something new, even if it stumbles along the way. It is a game with soul, with personality, and with a proposal that mixes nostalgia and originality in a way that is uncommon in the current **** retrofuturistic world, the solitary and contemplative vibe of exploration, and the creative use of the hoverboard and the Keytar show that, despite the inevitable comparisons to Zelda, Star Overdrive wants to be more than a shadow, it wants to be remembered for its own ****, the combat is weak, the progression sometimes hinders more than it helps, and the bosses… well, let's hope for updates. But none of this erases the fact that this is a journey worth experiencing. Especially if you are tired of more of the same and want something that embraces the boldness of making mistakes in the name of creating something truly unique. Star Overdrive is, ultimately, a love letter to creativity, and for all its ups and downs, it deserves to be played. patobah com br
