It's that kind of freedom and pressure-free atmosphere that makes Pirates! as good as it is. Now, if only it would be so nice as to make dancing less important in courtship - or at least less difficult - we'd have a completely enjoyable game.
A very simple game, but it is also very entertaining. It is easy to whittle away hours chasing galleons, seeking buried treasure or raiding ports. Meier seems to have a way with making games that are hard to stop playing.
Like its predecessor, Sid Meier's game effortlessly takes the best of every style of gaming and mixes it into a consistent and enduringly charming whole. Certainly there are games with more strategy, and others with more action, but few, if any, can claim to be as breathlessly easy to enjoy. [PC Zone]

It makes you feel like a pirate. Has a lot of depth for a 2004 game. Indian war canoe and quick slash go brrrr... Gets too repetitive after some time though

This game is really good, but players can get lost pretty easily unless they spend hours playing it to understand the missions. For example, I kept bringing governors to different towns only to enter without them, and then they get pissed off and left, or they died. Pirate ship battles are a blast (no pun intended), and plundering is cool. But duels with captains are monotonous (I won just about every duel by spamming “thrust”) and sailing can get pretty stale having to find a good gust of wind to get you going.

Sid Meier's Pirates! is as magically playable as its forefather was in the ancient times. [Jan. 05]

I have played this on PC and on the PSP, and I can say this was one of my favorite games growing up. I have played countless hours on this game and I have to say it is an amazing game overall. I will also note that when I play this on windows 10, there are some occasional graphical glitches, however the game is still playable, and it doesn't seem to effect anything other than the visuals.

Firaxis at its best. A fantastic reboot of the original Pirates! game. Everything is there from the original and more (sneaking and dancing minigames). You get a great, stereotypical and "kid friendly" pirate adventure with good replay value. The graphics and effects are just right for the theme. The story missions can get repetitive over time. I wish for an update around 2018.

The game truly stays faithful to the original Pirates! except with extended difficulty settings, added gameplay depth and fancy graphics.

With so much to do and the ability to do it at your own pace, Pirates! is the rare game that can entertain almost everyone.

It's varied, addictive, and replayable, with a big difference between the experiences available at lower and higher levels of difficulty.

The controls are so easy to grasp that you'll rarely find any need to look in the manual for anything other than general hints; this is a game you can really jump into and get on with right away, with none of the hassle of dull stat screens with useless information bothering you.

Elements such as marching onto an island, or talking to a governor, seem flat and underdeveloped. Islands are sparse and awkward experiences, while their governors are often illogical and nonsensical in their responses. [Jan 2005, p.88]

The game is very much like the Mount and Blade series but it is sooooo repetitive! The game very overrated as it really does not have much to offer, after a few cannon and sword fight I really sad to discover that this was the only thing to do in the game. The graphics have really dated and I don't like the cartoon style at all, in fact I feel as if they where trying to keep the game child friendly for some reason.

Total Rubbish, boring, poor visuals, repetitive. Totally overrated, I just don't know how they give it 88, a score similar to half-life 2! I Would not finish this gave if you paid me too, 0 / 10.
