I guess the question is, does Painkiller have any merits? It kind of does: again, if you don’t mind repetition and just want to shoot demons, it gives you every opportunity to do that, and you’ll get some big honking guns in the process. But if you want anything deeper or more substantial, you’re not going to find it here.

Painkiller is an honest production about its intentions: it wants you to shoot, explode, and customize your arsenal until you find the perfect combination for destruction. In this goal, it succeeds. The combat is satisfying, the weapon customization is robust, and the cooperative sessions deliver the expected chaos. The problem is that, surrounding this solid core, there is little content to sustain the structure. Nine stages across three biomes, repetitive enemies, and predictable level design cause the experience to quickly exhaust its freshness. For those looking for a few hours of unpretentious fun with friends, Painkiller delivers. However, for those expecting a shooter with the legs to last, the game remains trapped in its own purgatory of repetition.

Painkiller is a fast and frenetic arena shooter that evokes the best elements of its predecessors. Gunplay is tight, movement is quick and fun, encounters are well-designed, and the weapon upgrade mechanics are fun to explore. While the raids are an enjoyable ride and Rogue Angel offers some variety in replay value, it’s kind of disappointing that there wasn’t a cohesive story to be told. Couple that with matchmaking already showing signs of distress, and I have to wonder if this wouldn’t have been better served as a narrative single-player experience. Still, what’s here is a blast, especially if you have a couple of friends to play with.

You certainly can play it but the main question you should ask is why should you. It's bad but it's not "good bad", rather it's "bad boring bad". I don't understand why they made this game like this. This is just... It's ungodly. Whatever is not mediocre is just straight up broken, non-existent, boring or a chore. The combat's mediocre, music's mediocre, graphics mediocre. Whoever made this a coop game doesn't play coop I suppose. There is no synergy between characters, no powers, no roles, nothing. Characters are as annoying as flies on a barbecue. The story is non existent. The weapons have no punch at all. I can't believe they made this. Did they really think they would scrap some buck on this kind of product?

I’ll give Painkiller props for its imaginative weapons, sharp visuals, and visceral combat. It’s a hollow and transitory experience for solo players offline, and you can see what Painkiller has to offer in very short order. As a co-op game, it fares better. Still, I can’t imagine Painkiller becoming any shooter fan’s obsession. The nuts and bolts of what could be an impressive game are there, but in its present form, there’s simply too much repetition and too few surprises.

I don't understand the critics behind this title. The game is fast. The game is fun, the game is well optimized. To be honest I haven't seen a game with almost no bugs at launch in a long time. It runs super smooth on older PC. Try it, especially with friends (not bots!). Besides, this game was made for that — it's a co-op after all.
Rating 8 because the game is a little bit too short. Needs more content.

It’s “Painkiller” in name only — in reality, just pure rubbish wrapped in cheap nostalgia; anyone who was hoping for the return of the old-school PAINKILLER is in for a huge disappointment. This poorly made game feels more like Serious Sam — none of the dark atmosphere from the original, replaced by lame jokes and characters straight out of Fortnite.

Your feelings on the latest iteration of Painkiller will depend on several different factors. If you're looking for a title with a good story and characters or crave a true single-player experience, you'll hate it. If you're looking for something that doesn't require grinding to get the most out of the title, you'll also dislike the game. If you're looking for boomer shooter sensibilities in a co-op setting and really dig the different hellish vibes, you'll like Painkiller. Even then, unless you're a completionist, it'll take one run through all of the levels and perhaps a few attempts at the roguelike mode before you move on, making this a fleeting experience rather than something with staying power.

An uninspired return, frantic and fun, but lacking the soul and depth that made the original Painkiller a cult game.

Ironically, it pains me to say that Anshar Studios Painkiller has turned out to be one of those co-op shooters that just doesn't hit the mark the way you hoped it would. Devoid of a decent Painkiller-worthy backstory, 2025's Painkiller primary focus seems to be to just be punishing in hyperchaotic ways that drain the fun out of the combat loop. Adding the fact that most guns don't really feel punchy and the disappointing prospect of a meager nine repetitive levels at launch, Painkiller could be compared to over-the-counter Paracetamol: works for some, but not too long.

Despite its dynamic gameplay, Painkiller stumbles in every other aspect. The game will certainly disappoint series veterans and solo players, and even co‑op enthusiasts would find it hard to recommend at such a high price point.

The new Painkiller is not a good game. This is not a title that almost succeeded or has untapped potential that modders will fix. This is a short production, poorly made and ill-conceived at almost every level.

I’ve been obsessed with the original Painkiller since I was a kid, and I can say that this new one just looks bad and nothing like it should. The enemy design is whatever, and they just throw a ton of **** at you. They made it co-op, which is an awful decision, Painkiller was a single-player experience. The dark and gritty tone is gone, the weight of the main character and the bunny hopping are nonexistent. The entire unique Painkiller personality just isn’t there. Oh, and the soundtrack is as generic as it can be.

An abomination that has nothing to do with the original legendary Painkiller.

Disgusting. It's not Painkiller. They stole a name of once great game of the year 2004. There's absolutely nothing from the original game here. Instead, we have a squad of dimwitted, clownish, diversity characters who make toilet-sounding jokes and looks absolutely disgusting. The stolen mechanics from Doom Eternal and Left 4 Dead feels derivative and alien. The game resembles a nightmare circus. It's definitely one of the worst games of this year.
