If you're simply looking for pure shooting and explosions and don't mind the game's relatively small scale, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando can still be a decent option. Its large scale set pieces are something you rarely see elsewhere, and the satisfying gunplay makes blasting through hordes of zombies genuinely enjoyable. Beyond that, however, Toxic Commando mostly shows its flaws. Both its level design and core gameplay feel monotonous, dated, and lacking in excitement.

It's yet another shooter in an already overcrowded genre and despite Carpenter's name and the (at times) beautiful aesthetics, there's nothing here that stands out or makes you react. Fun in small doses? Absolutely. But something you'll be talking about in a year's time? Hardly.

With four classes with distinct powers to upgrade and over a dozen weapons, each with a bevy of unlockable attachments, players will have no trouble finding a build that appeals to them, so long as they’re passionately invested in mass-murdering zombies and the various mutant gunk creatures that come along for the ride. With a fast pace, extreme replayability and irreverent tone, Toxic Commando is a blast from beginning to end — I just don’t understand why it’s not called Toxic Commandos — because, again, there are four of them.

It's a very beautiful game, especially when playing online with friends, and even if you're alone you'll enjoy it.

Very fun and scratches that horde shooter itch. While incorporating interesting and fun vehicle mechanics for exploring small open world mission areas, the game is blast with friends making it a co-op experience to remember.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando surprised me. I expected it to be an enjoyable co-op shooter based on my previous experiences with it, but it ended up becoming my go-to game to play with friends. The gunplay is tight and extremely satisfying, and the decision to use contained maps with easy-to-find points of interest means there's action around almost every corner. There's also so much to upgrade, with gun customization being a very high point, and skill trees for the four character classes improving our abilities further. Even though there could be a little more variety, especially with character skins, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is one of the best co-op experiences I have had the pleasure of enjoying.

This isn’t a revolution for L4D-inspired games, but it is indeed a great example of how to do something that feels both new and traditional at the same time.

Toxic Commando is an interesting mix with the core of good old cooperative zombie action, on which it layers excellently crafted vehicle movement in difficult terrain. The random layout of the maps helps the replayability, although it would have deserved a little more variety. John Carpenter's name is not in the title for nothing, and the epic visuals combined with the bombastic soundtrack do not disgrace the name of the horror master at all.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a solid and fun cooperative shooter that takes the classic Left 4 Dead formula and applies some important changes, from the open-world maps (it's a shame they all look so similar) to the use of vehicles, from special powers to a customizable arsenal. The starting loadout is quite extensive, especially considering its low price, and the Swarm Engine delivers truly crowded and spectacular gameplay, creating a chaos that's a joy to play with friends.

Toxic Commando has immaculate vibes and incredible set pieces for fans of post-apocalypse mayhem, but it struggles with mission design and performance issues. For fans with friends, it might still prove indispensable.

Toxic Commando is a fun game that offers some meaningful shifts on the four-player zombie-killing genre. While the story is goofy and fun, true to John Carpenter's legacy, the characters can be grating and the missions feel somewhat narratively disconnected. Gunplay and progression are well-honed, though, offering an engaging zombie-killing time any group will have a good time with.

Although Toxic Commando has addictive moments and offers around 20 hours of gameplay, it lacks the spark and immersion it promised, besides having graphics that feel a bit outdated. However, the developer's formula still works; its story and good cutscenes are the ideal hook to keep you playing for a while.

game lacks content, needs way more then what it has now, you can only play the same maps so many times before its get really boring, needs more ASAP, otherwise its going to be done by end of month if not sooner.

Game is nice to play. performances are not great on console. And stick deadzone on a controller is huge and makes gunplay feels unresponsive. We are in 2026 and no way to tune controller settings for a FPS...?
