Gears of War: Reloaded is, without a doubt, the best way to relive the origins of Marcus Fenix and his squad. Its gameplay remains solid and impactful, demonstrating why it became a benchmark in its genre.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a beautiful reminder of simpler times and macho fantasies. It could have used a bit more polish in some areas, but if you want to revisit the beginnings of the Locust war or you’ve been missing a straightforward, high-octane slaughterfest that’s extremely linear but instantly engaging, the money spent will be well worth it.

With plenty of additional refinements, Gears of War Reloaded hardly feels like a game that’s nearly 20 years old - the action and co-op remain fantastic, even though the original grit has been replaced with a more colorful layer of modern graphics.

I'm reviewing this from a pure gaming perspective without the nostalgia glasses on. I think it may go up a point with nostalgia but as a game in 2026, where multiple excellent remakes have come out this one is pretty poor from gameplay perspective. The sprint mechanic is terrible, strange looking and even nauseating. Once you sprint you basically lose most rotational ability. Meaning if you're not already looking at where you want to go to, and sprint you can't turn to get there, you have to break the sprint. Not only that it can't be decoupled from the cover mechanic. This was and is driving me nuts because to sprint I keep trying to mash the left thumb stick and you can't rebind it. Gunplay is annoying I think mostly because it feels like your guns are underpowered forcing you to lay mag after mag into enemies despite blasting thier head. The cover mechanic is very jarring and sometimes you'll teleport to a cover spot you weren't intending or vault unintentionally. The guns could have used an upgrade system real bad or at least more weapon variety. Your AI teammates are straight doodoo. You have a command wheel for them to attack and it feels like it does nothing but make the character acknowledge the command... But then do nothing. They're also prone to running face first into gunfire and get downed making it a chore in gunfights. I get that its trying to stay true to the original but they should have updated the controls in a better way than this to bring it into modern times. It didn't get a 5 because of the graphics. Those are good. But it seems like that's it. I'm not really engaged in the story, actually I'm in act 5 and I've forgotten what I'm doing I'm just blasting things. I wish there was loot around. It's super old school where each room is just a wave based shooter, which, I guess is accurate for the times but I found/find myself wanting more depth. This could be a good reboot, but it needs much more modernization than this. As is, it's straight mid.

Clunky. Can't adjust difficulty in game, which is a problem early on when you get killed taking 2 shots. Waste of time and money.

Gears of War: Reloaded is the perfect way to experience one of the finest games of all time, with superior combat and a cover system that still hasn't been matched.

Gears of War Reloaded is a solid remaster that preserves the brutal and straightforward essence of the 2006 original. The linear campaign remains engaging, with guided storytelling, iconic characters, and heavy, cover-based combat. Visuals have been modernized with 4K resolution, HDR, 3D audio, and full DualSense integration. The multiplayer is fully featured, offering crossplay, cross-progression, and no microtransactions. While the AI shows its age, the pacing, weighty gameplay, and classic "more muscle, less brain" style make this version ideal for both longtime fans and newcomers.

(PS5)Still one of the best campaigns around. Not as gritty as the OG Xbox release from 20 years ago, but highly memorable. Let’s hope they bring GOW 2&3 to the PS5

Gears of War: Reloaded is a very solid game, even if the base is nearly 20 years old. The concept of a cover-based, stop-and-pop shooter may feel out of date, since so many other games have done this since the original title's release. The feeling of fast but weighted movement and meaty gunplay is still unmatched after all this time, though. It is a game that's easy to pick up and play without any compromises, and the title still has a great presentation despite the minor touch-ups from the original remake. For PS5 owners in particular, Reloaded is a perfect way to experience a very influential modern classic.

It's not just that Gears of War is a classic that everyone should know. The gameplay hasn't aged at all, and in this respect, it can rival contemporary titles. The basics are incredibly easy to learn, and the story combined with the shooting provides what games are meant for: a break from the grim reality where we won't be running through ruined cities and shooting at beasts emerging from the ground.

Taken on its own merits some nineteen years since its original release, Gears of War remains a blast to play, only showing its age in minor ways which do little to detract from what is a seminal piece of work. Though not too far removed from 2015’s Ultimate Edition, the lower price of entry makes this easier to stomach for PlayStation owners tempted to dive into the series that defined a generation of Xbox fans and that few games have bettered in the proceeding years.

Turn off your brain and enjoy blasting enemies in this straightforward yet highly fluid, quintessential game of its era: Gears of War: Reloaded. If you miss the gaming sensibilities of the PS3/Xbox 360 era, you’ll gladly embrace this experience.

It's a nice touch for the annals that long-time system seller Gears of War is now also available on PlayStation, but of course, anyone who ever really wanted to play Gears could have bought an Xbox at some point in all those years. Gears of War has been well past its sell-by date for quite some time now.

Gear of War: Reloaded is an excellent excuse to replay one of gamings best ever titles. A third person shooter that helped reinvent the genre into the post PS2 era and make online console gaming a thing to take notice of. Released initially in an era where it stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Halo and with Call of Duty coming into its prime, Gear of War wasn't just a great game for the Xbox 360. It defined the console generation as a whole. The release of reloaded captures all the magic in that original gameplay and maintains the brutal aesthetic of the Gears universe 20 years on. If you've never played a Gears of War game before there is never a better opportunity than with this release. If you have played it before then you'll be delighted to know that playing through it all again is still worth your time even in 2025.

Welcome aboard. I’m The Maritime Nerd, and today we’re charting a course through Gears of War: Reloaded. From gameplay to performance, I’ll be breaking down whether this classic sinks or sails. When PlayStation announced that Gears of War was finally coming to PS5, it hit me with a wave of nostalgia I didn’t expect. The original released back in 2006, a time that—at least for me—was defined by late nights, energy drinks, and countless hours in front of a screen. I hadn’t played a Gears of War title since Gears of War 3, so stepping back into this world felt like revisiting a formative era of **** those unfamiliar with the franchise, Gears of War originally launched on November 7, 2006, for the Xbox 360. You play as Marcus Fenix, a hardened soldier fighting for humanity’s survival against the Locust Horde—grotesque, lizard-like creatures that emerge after a brief period of peace. When that fragile treaty collapses, Marcus and his squad are tasked with restoring order and saving what’s left of **** cast is one of the franchise’s strongest elements. Marcus is the disciplined, by-the-book leader; Dom is his loyal right-hand man; Cole provides comic relief and heart; and Baird brings attitude and technical expertise. Together, they form a memorable squad that adds personality and emotional weight to the **** its core, Gears of War: Reloaded is a cover-based shooter—and in my opinion, one of the best examples of the genre. Its defining feature is the active reload system, which rewards precise timing. Hit the reload window correctly and you’ll reload faster; hit the smaller, perfect window and you’ll reload almost instantly. Miss the timing, however, and you’ll be punished with a slower reload—something that can be deadly in the middle of a firefight.Occasionally, the game breaks up on-foot combat with vehicle sections, where you man a mounted turret. While these moments provide a change of pace, they slightly detract from the intensity of the core combat, though not enough to significantly impact the overall experience.Weapon variety is another highlight. Your primary weapon, the Lancer, is a standard assault rifle with an iconic chainsaw bayonet, allowing for brutal close-quarters takedowns. You’ll also encounter pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, and grenades, though some of these weapons feel a bit scarce at times. Grenades are especially important, as they’re required to seal Locust emergence holes throughout the **** standout weapon unique to the franchise is the Hammer of Dawn. This devastating tool calls down a focused beam of orbital energy to incinerate enemies—but it only works outdoors or in areas with an open sky. When conditions allow, using it is incredibly satisfying and reinforces the game’s sci-fi spectacle.Revisiting the campaign, one thing that stood out was enemy durability. Enemies can feel like bullet sponges, often requiring nearly a full magazine to take down. This isn’t necessarily a flaw, but it was more noticeable than I remembered. Unfortunately, I also encountered a few technical issues. In one instance, I fell through the floor during combat, and in another, a vehicle became stuck halfway through a bridge due to terrain clipping. These moments were frustrating, though they didn’t completely derail the experience.Comparing the original release to this remaster, the differences are subtle but noticeable. Lighting has been improved, making environments brighter and more detailed. However, this does slightly diminish the darker, grittier tone of the original. The inclusion of five full acts, along with additional content previously exclusive to the PC version, is a welcome addition and helps round out the package.Overall, Gears of War: Reloaded is a strong return for PlayStation players. It delivers intense action, memorable characters, and a compelling sci-fi story that still holds up today. That said, it’s hard not to wonder why the entire original trilogy wasn’t included. Bringing all three games together would have significantly increased the value and appeal of this release.Even so, Gears of War: Reloaded is a welcome addition to the PlayStation lineup, and I hope this opens the door for future releases of the remaining titles.Final Score: 7/10 — Good and fun.Well done to Epic Games and Microsoft Game Studios

This was my first time playing Gears of War, I thought the gameplay was enjoyable, the graphics make it look very modern especially on 4k. The story is average, some of the levels are boring or tedious involving trial and error mechanics that detract from the overall experience. The combat is the best part, smooth fast paced and enjoyable especially during certain sequences. Overall I would say its an above average game that has aged well but falls short of being a masterpiece in 2025.

The corpser boss fight and other gimmicks in the campaign ruined this for me. I realized when I was facing this boss how tedious this game can be sometimes The boss' weak spot is unclear. I figure it out but I ran out of ammo since the boss' AI didn't seem to work properly.
SummaryExperience the origins of one of gaming’s most acclaimed franchises like never before. Featuring 4K resolution, up to 120 FPS support, and the ultimate multiplayer experience with cross-progression and cross-play, across all platforms, this is the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.
