I really appreciate Crypt Custodian for knowing its strengths and exploring them throughout the roughly 10 hours it took me to complete the game. The mix of Metroidvania and isometric platforming elements mix really nicely in a title where precision and readability are king. You won’t find a nail-biting challenge in this game, but some extra post-game boss rush modes can prove really demanding and give you that edge. And while the subject matter can be a bit much if you’re sensitive the same way I am to pet an animal death, Crypt Custodian made me look back fondly and remember my childhood pet and every animal I’ve ever loved.

The game of Kyle Thompson that I liked the least, it might just be that I do not like isometric games while I love the 2D sidescrolling metroidvanias, but I'm not sure it's that, I mean I did enjoy Zelda and Tunic.

I finished Crypt Custodian last night, as a friend of mine put it, a cozyvania, and that sums it up perfectly. Unlocking new abilities and areas in this top down map was a cute and charming adventure. It was already pretty forgiving with keeping area progress and currency intact when dying and not having to make long journeys to retry a boss again, but I still turned it down to Easy mode because I ****, haha.I liked that the map you could leave markers on to note places to come back to once you unlocked whatever you needed. The map actually ended up being a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be for a game like this. Not that it was a hugely long game though, it took me 12 hrs to finish. Being able to buy a hint of where to go next in the game was also super helpful.Some of the themes were a bit sad with this being the afterlife for animal deaths and the goal being able to see the people that they left behind again, but there was also some humour in there to break it up and overall it was very enjoyable.

It is a great game in terms of challenge, diversity of mobs, good number of great areas, platforming puzzles and the great designing of boss fights. Thanks Xbox for including a huge number of great games in Game Pass.

Crypt Custodian is a sensational top down Metroidvania, with compelling combat, loads of upgrades to experiment with, and of course cats!

Crypt Custodian takes a relatively dark plot and makes it whimsical, showing an at-times scary yet mostly wholesome version of the afterlife. With solid, familiar Metroidvania mechanics, great art, and fun characters, Crypt Custodian is sure to win you over.

Crypt Custodian may not be the most challenging metroidvania, nor does it reinvent the wheel, but it handles many of the genre’s most defining characteristics well. Between its customizable combat system, satisfying collectibles list, and lovely narrative, Thompson’s new release is worth picking up whether you’re newly interested in the genre or a metroidvania veteran—even if the difficulty is lacking.

I am partial to cats. Jokes aside, this is a fun metroidvania. It comes from a solo dev so I can't bee too harsh on it. The art style is very cool.
