Combolands takes a genre mashup that could easily have felt gimmicky and turns it into something genuinely compelling. It features tight gameplay, combo-driven runs with real strategic depth, a huge amount of build variety to explore, and performance that punches well above its modest development team size. Its biggest weakness is a difficulty curve that flattens out a bit too gently for players craving a real late-game challenge, but that’s a minor complaint against a game this replayable and this cheap. For fans of city builders, roguelites, or anyone who’s ever gotten lost chasing one more combo in Balatro, Combolands is an easy recommendation.

Combolands is an excellent experience that fully pulls off everything it sets out to accomplish. It’s smart, challenging strategy that pushes players to experiment with various mechanics while stacking as many bonuses as possible, and then watching the numbers get bigger. I was kept up far too late at night because of how engaged I was, and I can only say that this is a fantastic first outing for Crux Games, and I look forward to seeing what they make next.

The limitation of Combolands becomes apparent in the long run, when the quantity of available elements no longer translates into a corresponding variety of situations. The minimalist graphics turn each island into a small-scale model; the overall look is pleasing and cohesive, even if the game’s personality is somewhat understated. Buildings are easily recognizable in the early stages, whereas more crowded cities tend to become harder to read. However, the interface effectively organizes a considerable amount of information. The lack of Italian language support is a drawback, given the constant need to read descriptions, combinations, and keywords.

Combolands has a solid foundation, turning an unusual idea into an engaging experience at its best, with an intuitive mix of building, positioning, strategy, and combos that still rewards players who take the time to master its deeper interactions. The variety of guilds, items, builds, progression, and difficulty levels provides plenty of reasons to keep playing, while the satisfying evolution from an almost empty island into a small machine of chained effects is particularly compelling. However, slow structure unlocks, limited map variety, and some unclear mechanics keep the game from reaching the full potential of its premise. Even so, I enjoyed Combolands considerably, and with more polish and variety, it could turn a very good idea into something truly impressive.
