i've got to say, i've been hearing plenty of praise for this film, (in the horror circuit, of course), so, coupled with the surprisingly original premise, i was eager to see it... and... well... DAAAAAAAAYUM... this movie is superb. for starters, the acting, especially from jeffrey combs, is great, combs is both unnerving and interesting in equal measure as your otherwise standard crazy millionaire, brittany snow is a good lead, a monumental step up from prom night, sasha grey is good as amy, and whoever played lucas, (his name sounds russian), did a great job. and then, there's the fact that this film is SCARY, it is SUSPENSEFUL, there are very few jump scares, and they're mercifully not accompanied by an ear-piercing boost of volume, the suspense also has a good payoff as the things they end up doing are disturbing to watch, and right after it's over, the suspense comes rushing back, the violence is actually handled in a rather tasteful manner, it's not gratuitous, and yet the film manages to maintain it's shock value consistently. the way the film looks is also highly commendable, it is shot very well, the mansion looks amazing, (danny boyle could take a few notes), apparently, david guy levy's first film was terrible, if so, this is an incredible change for the better from this director, the script is also very well-written, it's admirably paced, tasteful, the dialogue fluctuates sometimes, but otherwise, it's well-written and incredibly well-directed. i seriously can't believe how underrated this film is, it's like ghost rider: spirit of vengeance all over again, if this is bad, and paranormal activity was good, then i will wear my lack of taste like a badge of honor.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III5

it's well acted, it looks good, it's strange, but it isn't too funny, i'm afraid, and it makes little sense, but it's a good night out if you're drunk, i'd recommend renting it and watching it with some friends, preferably wasted.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters10
Feb 16, 2013
so... i just saw this, and it is, along with gangster squad, the most criminally underrated film of the year thus far, it is a real treat to watch in 3d, the action is badass and entertaining, the characters are well developed and unique, there are some genuinely funny moments, and all the cast (even peter stormare) does a fine job, if you love action movies, i cannot emphasize this enough: WATCH THIS MOVIE... ESPECIALLY IN 3D

Resident Evil: Afterlife6
Jan 26, 2013
this movie is nowhere near as good as the first three, the plot has more gaping holes than a pornstar convention, or even every pornstar in america, it completely abandons most of the plot points from the first films, and even reveals that a cure for the t-virus ALREADY EXISTED... the cast this time around mostly consists of stereotypes: the asian, the black guy, the hollywood producer, the british girl, the pervert... need i go on, the action is rather entertaining despite the ridiculous amount of slo-mo littered throughout the movie, the 3d is implemented rather well, the soundtrack, by tomandandy, is the best in the series, if you like the first three movies, or are a hardcore action junkie, than you might enjoy this, but don't bother pointing out the quarry-sized plot holes throughout the movie, trust me, everyone else noticed them to...

Resident Evil: Retribution10
Jan 25, 2013
a highly entertaining movie, retribution is an effective return to form for the franchise (afterlife having more plot holes than your average uwe boll film), kevin durand (a very good actor in his own right) portrays barry burton perfectly, johan urb was an okay leon, and li bingbing was a gread ada, the plot explains much of the strange plot occurrences in the last films (how did the t-virus escape raccoon city? where is jill? etc.) and the action scenes are well choreographed and entertaining, the 3d is put to decent use (more depth than in-your-face, though a little more in-your-face wouldn't have been bad), the film as a whole is brilliant entertainment.

Slumdog Millionaire0
Jan 23, 2013
slumdog millionaire is just a group of plot devices moving through a childishly contrived plot, doing solely what said plot requires them to do, with no heart to make me believe otherwise. these anti-characters go through NO development or change whatsoever, they begin the terrible "story" as good or evil, with no grey area, and remain good or evil when the "story" ends, they don't even have much personality, jamal is good... because he's good, latika is good... because she's good, saleem is bad... because he's bad... they have no logical motivation, and before you try and tell me that saleem killing the owner of an orphanage/brothel is what made him evil... NO, saleem lets go of latika when they're escaping, saleem locks jamal inside a toilet, forcing him to swim through feces to get out (which is played for laughs)... saleem is a terrible person before he shoots the guy, and he's a terrible person after he shoots the guy... the fact that these aren't characters means the only time i care about anyone in the entire movie, is when saleem, latika and jamal are children... solely because they're little children, and nobody with a conscience can refuse to care about children who go through horrific torture and... WAIT WHAT??? that's right, this film centres around the torturing of children, the prostitution of children, the emotional suffering of children, you get the point, now let me explain why this is a problem, THIS IS WIDELY ACCEPTED AS ONE OF THE BEST FEEL-GOOD MOVIES OF 2008, doesn't the physical/sexual/emotional abuse of children just make any sane person feel all warm and fuzzy inside? I SINCERELY HOPE NOT! jamal and saleem had a terrible childhood which is revealed through flashbacks as terrible as the things they depict, it is from these flashbacks that jamal knows all the answers to the questions presented in an indian "who wants to be a millionaire" (which is impossble to cheat in, because only the host knows the questions/answers, and every variation of the show only uses LANDLINES to prevent connection failure, which renders two major plot points in the film completely invalid), but the most gaping plot holes arise when two of these flashbacks DO NOT EVEN GIVE JAMAL THE ANSWER, OR THE CHANCE FOR JAMAL TO FIGURE OUT THE ANSWER!!! oh, and they don't show jamal completing the general knowledge questions REQUIRED to appear on every variation of the show, which he would have failed at, because he is unaware that ghandi is on every piece of indian currency (even though he clearly earns indian money throughout the movie), if he doesn't know that, how much more does he not know? this alone renders the ENTIRE PLOT invalid... jamal went on the show because latika loves the show, and he loves latika, which is oh so IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE BECAUSE JAMAL AND LATIKA HAVE NO CHEMISTRY, THEY HAVE NO COMMON INTERESTS, THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE AN IN-DEPTH CONVERSATION IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE, this is what i meant when i said 'no logical motivation' jamal and latika are in love solely because the plot needs them to be, and dear god does it show. oh, and then there's the ending, now, all throughout the movie, there is a consistent theme: money is evil, so what happens... HE WINS!!! if the movie had any logical messages he would have lost, and realised, alongside the audience, that money isn't everything, but no... let me leave you with this: slumdog millionaire won eight oscars.

as i can't think of any other way to do this, i will give each segment a rating, all of them deliver at least some scares, not all of them work as well as they're meant to, but hey, it's scary, violent, and quite fresh, ironically enough, because of it's nostalgic qualities, it puts every other found-footage horror film to shame, now, with the individual ratings: 1 - 8.1 2 - 9.2 3 - 7.6 4 - 9.1 5 - 6.5 6 - 8.9

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D5

now, i am a very hard person to disappoint... BUT F**K YOU MICHAEL J. BASSETT, F**K YOU, F**K YOU, F**K YOU, WITH A RUSTY IRON SPIKE!!! needless to say, it was very disappointing, for starters, pyramid head is on all but TWO posters for the movie, he is in only TWO F**KING SCENES IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE, these scenes are both extremely underwhelming, when you hype up a monster with all of your promotional material, YOU HAVE TO DO MORE WITH HIM!!! the characters, only three are developed with any effectiveness (heather, harry and vincent), and adelaide clemens is so flat, she barely has any of the heart her character did, kit harington was good, and sean bean was, as always, great, carrie-anne moss, was great as claudia, malcom mcdowell was great as leonard, and deborah kara unger was great as dahlia, who is BARELY IN THE MOVIE, despite the fact that she deserves a greater role as she is, by proxy, heather's mother!!! martin donovan was good but also pushed almost out of the movie altogether, and what happens to him, CHEAP!!! oh, and don't blink, you might completely miss rahda mitchell... who inexplicably provides a quiet mediocre performance... and to the shear lack of scares... there were only two scenes that scared me, one involves a birthday party, those who have seen it know what i mean, the other involves the mannequin spider... which strangely enough only lasts 40 seconds... like i said, CHEAP... the plot also seems flat sometimes, but the worst part? the fact that open road cut near FIFTEEN MINUTES out of the film, which they have voiced no intention of putting back in... what a shear f**king disappointment, this is barely silent hill, PLEASE MICHAEL J. BASSETT, NEVER MAKE ANOTHER SILENT HILL MOVIE EVER AGAIN!

uwe boll, what you just made, was one of the most insanely idiotic things i have ever seen, at no point in your rambling, incoherent film, were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought, EVERYONE on this page is now dumber for having seen it... i award you no points, and may whatever god exists have mercy on your soul.

The Others2
Jan 5, 2013
okay, i was shown this as per the "gothic" section of the year ten english curriculum (in australia), and DEAR ZOMBIE JESUS DOES THIS MOVIE ****! first off the bat, the twist ending, for anyone observant enough, is downright obvious within the first half hour, why? m. night shayamalan made the sixth sense in 1996, a decent film that had a mind-blowing twist, in 1999, the japanese, whether they had heard of the sixth sense or not, nonetheless, refined the formula and gave us a more psychologically daunting and horrific take on the idea with silent hill, and in 2001, the others completely leeches off both of them (even the fog) to try and refine the "people who don't know they're dead" concept, which fails pitifully to bring anything fresh to the table, or to even creep me out, and even if you hadn't seen or heard of either of these things, it would still be obvious if you payed attention, because it is executed so sloppily! secondly, the scares are NON-F**KING-EXISTENT, why? because the twist is so obvious and, just like paranormal activity, it does not give you anything to be scared of, oh, the curtains are down, how scary, oh, the plastic tarp (plastic tarp? one word: ANACHRONISM) rustled, how scary, oh, someone is walking loudly on the floor above, how scary... need i say, er... type more? only two scenes are creepy throughout the mercilessly dull 105 minute runtime: that iconic scene with anne in the pretty dress, and the scene where the housekeepers are confronting grace on the steps of her manor, after the little revelation that they're... TAKE ONE GODDAMN GUESS! thirdly, the performances... dear god... nicole kidman is TERRIBLE, what is particularly amusing is roger ebert said the following "nicole kidman succeeds in convincing us that she is a normal person in a disturbing situation" her character is painted, from the start, as a thinly-veiled psychotic lunatic, i had no empathy for her, and because of that, all the scares that should have worked despite the poor twist fall flat, james bently was a terrible child actor playing a terrible child character, frankly, i wouldn't care if he died a violent horrific death, and that is not a good thing, alakina mann was one of three talented people in the entire movie, she was a decently realized character, and thus, i cared about her, which is why the scene i mentioned earlier worked so effectively, eric sykes and fionulla flanagan were great as the housekeepers, who manage to make otherwise flat dialogue oddly chilling, the story behind the maid was chilling, even if elaine cassidy wasn't really good as the maid. finally, the sorry human being who made this, when you can't get kidman to act properly, and your movie rips off shayamalan and a video game, YOU NEED TO REVISE YOUR F**KING MOVIE!!!

The Collection9

a worthy sequel that sufficiently carves out its own identity, dunstan once again proves to be an energetic and devoted director/writer, though there are much less developed characters this time around, in every other respect, it is bigger, and most certainly better, than the first film, even if you haven't seen the first, this is still great as a standalone film so please, if you love horror movies, you will find plenty to enjoy here.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance10
Jul 19, 2012
Ladies and gentlemen, how could you possibly prefer the first ghost rider movie? it had NOTHING to do with the comics, it just tried to stitch elements from TWO DIFFERENT STORY ARCS onto a mediocre western story which also has nothing to do with the comics, the first film just falls apart the moment it tries to move forward, spirit of vengeance, however, actually gets it right, neveldine/taylor mostly focus on ONLY ONE STORY ARC, that of johnny blaze, and the new appearance is ACTUALLY CREEPY, the VFX are phenomenal, and the rider's bike is ACTUALLY THE BIKE HE HAS IN THE COMICS, not some cheesy... THING they gave us in the first film, not to mention they actually get the villain's appearance right this time, seriously, look it up, blackout actually looks like he does in the comics, i grew up on these comics, so did my brother, and this film has finally restored my faith that we, the devoted fans, can still be given the adaption that we deserve, and the sad thing is that most people on here overlook this...
