AVICII Invector Encore Edition

Avicii Invector was a very unexpected surprise. Ever since I was a small child, Avicii has been one of my favorite artists of all time. As with millions of other people across the world, his songs have spoken to me in a way that cannot be described with words. His passing away in 2018 hit me very hard. However, I will always remember Tim Bergling in my heart for all they joy he has brought me with his songs. When I first heart about this game, I was very skeptical. But upon doing research I found out that Avicii was working on this game for a long time. Today I got to play it for the first time and it is insanely fun. This is my first rhythm type game and I enjoyed every second of it. All the songs are Avicii's biggest hits over the years, and it was beautiful to listen to them again while flying a spaceship through beautiful landscapes. Obviously, the best part of Invector is the music itself. Avicii's songs are universally loved, and even if you are not a gamer you will have a great time playing this. I think it is worth to play it, and I am glad this project saw the light of the day. RIP Tim Bergling, I will always remember you. Final Score: 82/100

Tell Me Why

Tell Me Why is the next game from Dontnod Studios: the creators of the Life is Strange series, one of my favorite videogame series of all time. As with these games, Tell Me Why features a choice-based narrative with supernatural elements and taking a deeper look into the main characters' lives, personalities and minds. Something few games are doing nowadays. I was excited for this game, expecting a heart-wrenching yet beautiful story and being forced to make difficult choices. However, the final product left me very disappointed. I tried not to compare Tell Me Why to Life is Strange, but it was hard considering the studio's legacy and how high they set the bar with those games. This game is the story of Alyson and Tyler Ronan: two twins who after a tragic accident have to be separated at a young age. When they are reunited a decade later, they start to unravel secrets of their past that change the entire perspective of their lives. As with Life is Strange, there is a supernatural element to the game. The twins have the ability to remember things that happened years ago watching them play out in the present. This is something that looked cool in the trailers, but in the game it is extremely boring and doesn't really do much. They also have the ability to talk to each other through their minds, this is an something that you only get to use two times in the entire game. And it is completely useless. The dialog choices and story are extremely linear, there are absolutely no difficult decisions that you have to make. The technical aspects of the game were bad. The conversations and interactions felt insanely videogamey and unrealistic. It was a massive downgrade from. Basically Tell Me Why is like playing through a 9-long hour cutscene. I got so bored towards the end that I started making all the wrong and intense choices just to make the game more interesting. And still nothing much happened in the story.

Gears of War 4

The new chapter in the Gears of War saga is a fresh start with new and old faces coming together to face a new threat. This is the beginning of a new trilogy, and I was first skeptical of how they would follow the story after the third game's glorious ending. But I must admit, I was impressed with how this game was handled. Gears of War 4's new characters are great, especially JD and Kait. I am glad that the future of the franchise has some interesting and well written protagonists to carry it on. Marcus will always be my favorite, and I am glad that he is back in all of his glory. In general, this game does a lot to continue the story and expand the Gears of War world. The writing has a more cinematic feel, with richer dialogues and more expressive characters. I am glad that the developers are taking full advantage of technological advancements to give us a great experience. The gameplay remains mostly the same, with a few minor alterations. I will always have fun playing the Gears of War games, and I don't think it is necessary to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the controls and combat. The new weapons are great, as well as the robot enemies. I think this game does a great job of changing the formula a little without leaving behind the things that make these games good in the first place. Overall, I think the story leaves a lot to be explored in future chapters. This series has a lot of potential to be one of the best in game history, and I will definitely be here to enjoy the ride.

INSIDE

Inside is a beautiful and dark game that left me with a lot of thoughts at the end. Another work of art from Playdead, the same studio that gave us Limbo (2010). These games have an amazing setting and environment that reminds me of my own dreams. Without any dialogue, most of the story is told through the world's environments, leaving a lot to the interpretation of the player. This game is perfect for forming theories and gathering your own points of view about the world. Personally, I think Inside is a metaphor for the dangers of authoritarianism. There are hints to this all over the game. However, there is so many things that point to other themes, most notably: individualism, curiosity, rebellion, environmentalism and the loss of innocence. The gameplay and game design are great. The lack of UI and really any context give Inside a feeling that I haven't seen in any other games. The animations are extremely smooth and take advantage of the console's controller functions. Some puzzles are annoying, personally puzzles are some of my least favorite aspects ****. But the beautiful score, feeling and atmosphere of Inside make this a great game.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers

Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a survival horror game that reminded me a lot of Psycho (1960) and Silence of the Lambs (1991). It is tense, terrifying and anxiety-inducing. For a low budget production, I was very pleased with the end result. These are the kind of indie horror games that are worth playing, you can sense the passion from the developers. The story is interesting and rich, leaving a lot of room for development in future sequels. There are some very obvious influences and similarities from certain horror movies. But I think this saga can stand on its own. Rosemary is a good character although we don't really get to learn much from her. But what really sells the game are the enemies. The Red Nun has an awesome design, and Jennifer is absolutely terrifying. Especially with the way she shrieks and chases you. A big issue that this game has, is the gameplay. At least on the nintendo switch, the controls are clunky and awkward. The enemies' movement patterns make zero sense at times. It feels like they always know where you are hiding. If you enjoy stealth in videogames you won't mind that most of the game is like that. I'm personally more inclined towards combat-based horror games, but I enjoyed Tormented Fathers for its aesthetic and story. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version has a lot of bugs and issues that became annoying at several points. Some of these bugs caused me to restart the game, having to repeat entire sections. Also making it unable to progress and continue towards the end. I think these issues should be fixed because I think it can really break the game. Other than that, Tormented Fathers was an enjoyable experience and I can't wait for the sequel to come out in a few months.

Gears of War: Judgment

Gears of War: Judgement is a different experience from the other Gears titles. However, there is still a lot of fun to be had here. While I enjoyed fighting my way through hordes of locust throught the decently sized campaign, the story was very lackluster. Still, I think this was a good game. I think it is worth to play it if you are going through this series for the first time. This installment of the franchise introduces a new gameplay system that changes the way the campaign is played. The levels are short, between 5 and 10 minutes each, and I think the point system is a bit strange and unnecessary. I expected it would become annoying in the beginning, but in the end it doesn't really change much about the core Gears of War experience. Each level introduces a challenge that spices things up. I thought a lot of them were fun and creative. The story is boring save from a few parts towards the end. Maybe I just missed Marcus, Dom, Anya and the rest of the classic characters. The new crew doesn't leave you as attached or interested in their story. Because Baird and Cole appear in the other Gears games, this prequel doesn't have many stakes. The most interesting thing I found in the story was the overarching jury plot. The final act was amazing, with a very intense bossfight. Overall I enjoyed Gears of War: Judgement.

The Henry Stickmin Collection was an unexpected but amazing surprise that took me back to my childhood. I remember spending hours playing these games trying to discover all the different fails and endings. After 10 or so years, these adventures aged really well and I thank PuffBall for gathering these games into a single great experience. This game brought so many memories. Henry Stickmin is a hilarious protagonist. The humor is very well done and I laughed out loud at several moments. I think The Herny Stickmin collection will be considered a classic in computer games for a very long time. I loved all the videogame, TV Show and movie references scattered throughout the game. There are so many great easter eggs that many people will enjoy. This is one of the things that shines the most here, the amazing care that the developers put into these stories.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the best games I have ever played, there are so many things that I enjoyed here that I wish I could play it all over again. It is a beautiful tribute to one of my favorite characters of all time. The way Insomniac crafted this game shows how passionate and dedicated the studio was to these characters and universe. The gameplay is very engaging. Even when you are doing nothing, it is insanely fun to swing around the New York ****. The controls are fun to use and in hard-mode, it provides a fun and stimulating experience. The combat and skill tree were very interesting and had a lot of abilities that changed the gameplay quite a bit, providing new experiences even towards the end of the game. This is one of those games that take advantage of the full immersion of the PS4 and does not become repetitive. The story and city of New York are loyal to the comics and all iterations of Spidey. At points, It felt a lot like playing a movie, especially with how great the cutscenes and writing were. Speaking of movies, I absolutely loved using the Tom Holland suits, although if you are more of a fan of another interpretation of Spider-Man, there is probably an option for that. I loved that they included dozens of cosmetic options for Spidey. Letting you craft you own story to a certain extent. I think the demon storyline goes on for way too long. I was expecting more of a focus on classic Spidey villains. That is why I thought the second half of the game was perfect. Battling the Sinister Six is everything I ever wanted from a Spider-Man experience. I thought that this interpretation of the classic characters was very well done. This includes secondaries such as Mary Jane, Aunt May, Miles Morales among others. There were all likeable and leave you wanting to see more of them. The DLCs are 100% worth it. They are a great expansion that continues the main story from the game. Contrary to most game DLCs, they do not feel like filler, the characters are expanded upon and transformed in very drastic ways. I even thought at points that The City That Never Sleeps storyline was even better than the main game's story. Silver Sable and Black Cat have become two of my favorite characters. Although I wish to see more of them in a sequel, the Spider-Man universe is so big that I can't wait to see what new heroes and villains Insomniac studios introduces in the future. This game did an amazing job with Peter Parker's story. It leaves so much space for future stories, while having a clean conclusion on its own. I can't wait to be a part of this universe again when the Miles Morales game drops later this year.

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human is a thoughtful, inspiring, and to a certain extent, terrifying game that is sure to cause anyone an existential crisis. This is one of the richest experiences I've had and I cannot recommend it enough. The game's world is perhaps the most realistic depiction of the following decades that I have seen in any media. As I was playing, there were a million questions that popped into my head. Everything from the new technologies I was observing to the way society restructured in order to accommodate these. By far, the biggest impact in the world will be the improvement and adoption of A.I. by humanity. Detroit: Become Human does a great job of showing us how that world will look like. From my initial impressions, I realized that this was going to be a very profound and well detailed game. This is my first Quantic Dream title and I can already tell that it is a studio full of passionate people who put a lot of care into telling a compelling story with an interesting premise. One can see that they did their research before producing a game that takes on the important topics of A.I. and futurism. Some of the themes most present in the game are: meaning, purpose, identity and civil rights. This is the most philosophical and political game I have played and I loved every second of it. The scenes where the androids questioned their very programming resonated with me. It made me realize that us organic beings will not be so different from them after all. By far my favorite character out of the three robots was Kara. Her story made me think the most and I adored her relationship with Alice. The philosophical question on whether artificial beings can love, hate or care about something or someone is best reflected through Kara. Throughout her journey, she risks her life to save Alice and feels stress when facing danger. I truly believe it is possible for A.I. to develop feelings (or an equivalent of them). These thoughts raise a lot of questions about the meanings of love, parenthood and relationships. These are all ideas that will be challenged and questioned in the next few decades, and we must be ready for them. Markus' story has a lot of important lessons and questions we must ask ourselves in the future when A.I. arrives. Is it a matter of principle to treat everything with respect, wether it is artificial or not? What really constitutes consciousness and personhood? I also sensed a lot of messages against the threat of government and corporate tyranny in our future. The characters' stories all share the themes of preserving liberty against those who try to take them from us. The magazines you find throughout the game are some of the best collectibles I've seen in a game. They paint a very interesting picture of our future. These magazines contain news articles reporting on topics like technological advances, politics, climate change, entertainment, etc. Some of them will fill you with existential horror, optimism or food for debate. Reading them feels like taking a peek into our future, something a lot of people will be looking forward to. but also making us have more consciousness in the present. I loved Detroit: Become Human and I think everyone should give it a go. The story is well paced and impactful, the characters are very interesting and likeable, making you think carefully every decision you make in order to protect them. This is truly an experience that will always be a part of my life.

Fran Bow is a dark story about a little girl and her cat who try to get back home after a terrible tragedy. It is full of mystery, horror, fantasy and adventure. This game will not be for everyone, but personally I found it to be extremely well made and inspiring. The game has one of the most hauntingly beautiful characters and world I've seen in any kind of media. As I was playing, I became very captivated by what I was seeing. There are many disturbing moments in the game that I am sure many horror fans will appreciate. Chapter 3 specifically is a more fantasy themed adventure that I enjoyed a lot. One can tell that the artists and developers at Killmonday had a lot of passion and dedication for Fran Bow. I must say, this is not a game for kids. Some characters suffer gruesome fates, and the imagery when Fran is under the effects of the pills caused me nightmares. I praise the developers for taking on themes such as: tragedy, mental illness, and childhood imagination in a good way. This game leaves a lot of room for fan theories and interpretations. I am very interested in getting to know the universe a little bit more. Although an amazing game in every sense, Fran Bow requires you to do a lot of confusing things in order to advance the story. This makes playing the game excruciating without a walkthrough. This is something many point and click experienced players will be okay with, but for the average player it can get annoying. There are puzzles in this game which are nearly impossible to figure out without trying different possibilities for hours. Making you feel like you are wasting your time. The ending left a satisfying conclusion. Although I felt that there was still much to learn about the Fran Bow universe. I think there is a lot of possibility for the future of this series, if the creators decide to continue with it.

This game is better than it's 2016 predecessor in every way. From the beginning to it's amazing conclusion, this game is action packed to the brim, making you enjoy every stage, every boss fight and every second of the game. The thing I want to praise the most about Doom: Eternal is it's diverse environments and the enormous expansion to the lore of this universe. Every new planet, dimension and level looks beautiful, especially Taras Nabad and Urdak. The Slayer is an amazing character that was expanded a lot in Eternal with a complete backstory and awesome interactions, I loved collecting everything so that I could learn about this universe. The weapons, enemies and bosses are great. The Marauder is awesome and it makes me want to see more of him in the future. I recommend Doom: Eternal a lot. If you like fast paced FPSs you should definitely give it a go.

The Last of Us Part II

There are few experiences in life that stick with you for a long time after you've passed them. Out of those, only a handful affect you on such a deep level, that your outlook on life is changed forever. The Last of Us Part 2 is one of those experiences. This is a game that has been controversial since its release, I am sure that many who play it will be angered, saddened and understandably frustrated. I sure was, however, this is not a usual story. Part 2 definitely took some risks, but I wholeheartedly believe that everything has a reason, and it definitely pays off in the end. This is a story centered around both the characters and several important lessons in morality and philosophy. The way I saw it, the events in the first game blend perfectly into this one. They are two sides of the same coin. Love and Hate, Hope and Despair, Salvation and destruction. The gameplay and visuals are spectacular, there were many moments that I enjoyed because of this. It gave me the chance to take a lot of good pictures. The controls and gameplay are the same as The Last of Us 1, with tons of accessibility options that I appreciated. I think TLoU2 sets a new bar for expectations in the gaming industry. You can tell that a large group of passionate developers worked hard to bring us a story that will stay with us for a long time. Having said this, I also think some people will not like the choices in the story. **SPOILERS FROM HERE** I think that Abby was a very well written character with strong and justifiable motivations. Her journey in the beginning of the game to get revenge on Joel is perfectly reflected on Ellie's journey to hunt her down. They are both fueled by grief they believe will only be cured once they accomplish their goal. No matter how much pain they cause to the people around them. Jesse, Dina, Tommy, Manny, Mel, Owen. They all were dragged into a battle between two unstoppable and determined forces of destruction. Playing the game from Abby's point of view is not a cheap way to make the players sympathize with her, it shows us how anyone can go through pain. Her journey with Lev somehow reflects how as anyone will go to far lengths for revenge, they will do the same thing for love. This is the main lesson of The Last of Us 2, there are no protagonists or villains in real life. Everyone is trying to live their life the best way they can. I applaud this game for taking this path, giving us a depressing but thoughtful ending that hopefully provides a great example for storytelling in the future. I think anyone should give The Last of Us Part 2 a playthrough and form their own conclusion, for me it is one of the best games of the generation.
