I found the film version excellent and very moving (I saw the live show in New York with Ben Platt). I don't know why there is such negativity about this film. It has constant tension as we see Evan make a huge mistake and plunge into a morally ambiguous world where his bad action has many positive outcomes. The songs are fantastic and the music numbers are well-directed. I did think it was a bit too long -- some of the songs seem like asides that didn't add up to anything for me. Overall, if you like movie musicals, this is a good one.

This is one of those movies with one scene that doesn't work following the next scene that doesn't work. For some reason I didn't hate it. I felt like I kept getting glimpses of a better film, which I found out later is the film this was based on.

Much better than I expected. I'm aware of Leonard Cohen's music, but not particularly a fan, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this documentary. For me, it tells three stories -- an enduring love story, an intimate view of a particular slice of society during the sixties and early seventies, and a story of a artist trying to outrun his neuroses. Excellent and amazing footage from beginning to end. I do wish they had showed more of the songs to allow us to reflect on the lyrics, but otherwise delightful.

Pleasant workmanlike documentary. I enjoyed this but I wouldn't say I was affected by it. Saw this at the theater, and a lot of the old archival footage shots had some bad compression artifacts.

Was having trouble caring at first, but I guess I was drawn in by the visuals which were stunning. By the end I was completely engaged with the story as well.
