The Karate Kid10
Aug 3, 2017
Roger Ebert and Rita Kempley are the only critics here who got this one right. Sure it's somewhat predictable and melodramatic at times, but the real magic here is the father/son type relationship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel, and Morita and Macchio are perfect in those roles.

Creepshow8
Jul 26, 2017
A great collection of creepy tales similar to the Stephen King short story books (Night Shift, Skeleton Crew) with a horror comic storyline threading everything together. I saw this movie on HBO at way too young of an age and I'll probably never forget the scenes of Ted Danson buried up to his neck in sand as the tide rolls in, or the **** pouring out of a man's mouth. Burned into my brain forever.

Gremlins6
Jul 26, 2017
Somewhere between horror, comedy, and a Christmas movie, Gremlins has a little something for everyone. Doesn't hold up quite as well now as it did when I was 7, but Gizmo is still adorable and the "bad" gremlins are still kind of scary. The problem with this one is that it feels like a kid's movie that is too dark for kids and maybe a little too formulaic for adults.

The Color of Money9
Jul 26, 2017
One of the greats of the 80's! Pre-scientology Tom Cruise was perfect at playing the cocky, young prodigy and Paul Newman was at his best as the aging master. There's still no better movie made about the finer points of pool hustlin'.

Creepshow 25

Though not nearly as memorable as its predecessor, it's still a fun adaptation of some creative Stephen King short stories (particularly The Raft). When I saw it during its theatrical run, my parents got offended and made us leave about halfway through. So it was years later as an adult that I revisited it, and although it wasn't very scary, it had a few great lines and memorable scenes. "Thanks for the ride, lady!"

The Thing10

One of the best horror movies of all time! Great cast, creepy score and some horrifying special effects that still hold up well - not sure why the critics were hating on this in 1982. It's one of the first movies I'd recommend to anyone who likes horror and suspense.

Maximum Overdrive7

This movie deserves at least a 7 just for the AC/DC soundtrack alone! I must have watched this 10+ times in the middle of the night on TBS growing up, and I enjoyed it every time. This story should be taken a bit more seriously now that we're pushing into the era of self-driving cars. I'll be ready!
