This is not your $60 AAA title. However, it is a fantastic $20 (or less) indy game that provides hours of enjoyment. Even though all options are open to you at the beginning, the game is challenging and enjoyable as you build your town, care for your people, and avoid (or not) disaster. The bleak desperation in the game makes it equal parts realistic and enjoyable. This is a great city builder type of game that is fun, interesting and challenging. It isn't quite as replayable as I'd like (though I have 40+ hours in it), but I'd definitely recommend.

Europa Universalis IV5

This game is your standard micro-management world domination type of game. It has a demo, so check it out and see if it is worth buying. Two things I don't like: 1) Almost all the 10 star reviews on here are from people who have never reviewed another game, and they all use pretty much the same language. So be suspicious. 2) The game itself has tons of DLC so if you want the "full experience" it costs closer to $70, not the $40 you pay initially. Beside that, rebels in the game are severely overpowered, and so world domination becomes more of a "whack-a-mole" challenge with rebels that magically arise from poor and remote provinces with 10 armies. Sure, keep your people happy, give them what they want, expand slowly I get it. But if you want anything resembling a "quick" game (under 30 hours) this is not it. And the 30 hours aren't fun it's just waiting for things to build, hoping nobody declares war on you for the things you did 500 years ago, and totally disrupting your empire's stability. Also, research: It penalizes you for getting ahead, which basically takes away any incentive for a technological type victory and instead forces you into the cookie-cutter "gentle wars and diplomacy" approach that this is built around. Overall, game design needs a bit of diversity, and more strategic options to make it replayable.

Saints Row IV7
Aug 25, 2013
Saints Row 4 is basically Saints Row 3 with cheat codes (ie Superpowers). It is the exact same city, same quests, same characters, and same level of ridiculousness. The two things that are different are that A) now you have superpowers; and B) it is surprisingly less sexy. If you liked SR3, this is just a "$50 quest addon pack." But as a stand alone game if you've never played Saints Row before it's a great game that is fun, silly, and a bit over the top at times.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified5
Aug 20, 2013
First, it's hard to separate this from the X-Com series since it has X-Com in the name. It is an FPS "in universe" so there's a lot of somewhat familiar characters, but the story makes no sense and is not at all related to other games in the series. As a stand-alone squad FPS it's fairly lacking. Squad controls are mediocre, and AI is terrible (running into walls, ignoring land mines, running through open areas rather than using nearby cover, etc). It really has to be micromanaged which isn't fun in an action game, and will likely get your main character shot. The game also lacks a lot of polish The graphics are dated (even for the 1960's style) and framerates are slow on high-end machines unless you seriously turn down settings. The overall storyline is full of cliche moments, and the game just lacks an overall amount of completeness. This isn't something that's likely to be fixed through patches either, as the "core" game is done, but not all the little extra things that make it feel alive. It is an interesting take on the genre, overall, but I have buyers remorse and would not recommend it to others especially not at full price.

Omerta: City of Gangsters6
Jul 30, 2013
Omerta is an average game that is fun if you get in on sale. It has an x-com style combat system (though not nearly as extensive in terms of variability and combat options). The meta game gets a bit redundant over time, though the recent additions of sandbox mode and other small improvements has increased re-playability somewhat.

Expeditions: Conquistador6
Jul 30, 2013
Expeditions Conquistador is definitely a mixed experience. The overall battle gameplay and discovery systems are fun and engaging, but some of the larger gameplay elements are terribly flawed or just boring. Specifically, having your main characters randomly die during the "choose your own text adventure" sidegames is a terrible gameplay experience. Moreover, exploration and story quests were boring and redundant overtime. It's an ok game with interesting elements, but there's too much text based story, and not much of an "epic" feel to anything that happens.

A fun game and interesting concept. The campaign mode needs a bit of work, but it is an easy "no commitment" game that you can hop in and out of playing.

Great game and great storytelling. The gameplay has a few flaws and it feels very predictable, but for the genre, it was a fantastic interpretation and worth the time spent.

Endless Space7
Aug 15, 2012
I'd really like to give this game a 7.5. This is not the best 4x game I've played and it seems to be lacking in some areas (combat) and has generally low customizability (compared to Galactic Civilizations and others) and become rather boring at higher levels of game play. However, as a pre-order player, I was very impressed by the responsiveness of the developers which seems to matter more and more. They are very dedicated to creating a quality experience and I'm sure it will get better with time. I like this game and it had some neat ideas and implementations (resources, for example), but it is lacking in ways that reduce my desire to keep playing it and I've found myself returning to older classics instead.

Legends of Pegasus3
Aug 14, 2012
This game has huge potential but is currently incomplete, buggy, and unplayable. I actually pre-ordered it with high hopes for it, and I continue to have high hopes that Kalypso will update the game to fix these issues, at which point I'd be happy to update my review. But the fact that they released a game that is barely ready for an early beta reflects extremely poorly on the developers and publishers. They can redeem themselves by fixing the issues, but at this place I cannot recommend this to anyone.

Back to the Future: The Game - Episode V: OUTATIME4
Nov 21, 2011
Bought this game on a random whim, and absolutely hated it. Perhaps it was the boring storyline, horrible controls, or the general play style, but I could not get into it at all, and found it to be not well suited to the PlayStation. It did have its positive moments, but overall I regret purchasing this game.

Orcs Must Die!8
Nov 21, 2011
An inexpensive game that provides exactly what you see on the title: the chance to slaughter orcs. Despite the brutal traps, it is a fun and cartoony game with little blood and gore. Even so, it provides enough challenge and diversity to keep it interesting throughout.

Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition9

The ultimate edition adds both expansions and the base game to make a very product. It is a great turn-based strategy game that gives you tons of customization options (very powerful shipbuilding tool) as well as extensive strategy options for winning.

Sid Meier's Civilization V8
Nov 21, 2011
I loved the game, but am disappointed with how much is being sold as DLC rather than being included in the original game, and DLC that only adds civilizations and not really anything new or interesting. I do like most of the changes to the base game, but overall it is just another addition to a very successful franchise.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim10
Nov 21, 2011
My only major complaint is the very poor UI design for managing inventory. But otherwise it is an incredibly open world where it seems like everything is possible. The PS3 controls take a bit to get used to, but the gameplay is incredible. For anyone that has any interest in RPGs, it is an excellent addition to the genre.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 39
Nov 8, 2011
On it's own, it is a very solid game that is very well made. The downside is that it is very similar to past games in the series which are also very solid and very well made. So does MW3 add a lot to the series? No. There's some nice new perks and mechanics, as well as a continuation of the story, but overall it's very much the same. So for new players or big fans, this is pinnacle of the Call of Duty franchise. But honestly, it's set only slightly higher than the rest of the series.

Battlefield 36
Oct 31, 2011
The game is a mix of Good and Disappointing. Overall online games seem too slow (30 minutes per game, with the top scorers usually only getting 20~ish kills). So you spend way too much time running with little actual action. I'm also not at all impressed with the menu system. For example, you can't quit a server between battles, which means you actually have to start a match in order to leave. This means that sometimes entire teams leave right as a battle starts, leaving you alone to defend until new people join. Also the leveling system is weird, and only allows one pre-set per class, so there is no way to build different presets for different situations. Overall, it is a decent game, but it is really hard to get into and enjoy as much as previous games in the franchise and genre.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution9

Rented on Redbox and took it back the next day just so I could buy my own copy. It's an awesome game with a lot of freedom and variability in how you play. Not just a normal FPS, but a good and interesting game with RPG and FPS elements.

Tropico 48
Sep 2, 2011
This game is much like Tropico 3, but with a few minor improvements. If you loved #3, you'll love #4 even more. They stayed very loyal to the original concept and added a few improvements and additional options, but in some ways it seems like they could have done a lot more and so it feel more like a really good expansion rather than a full-blooded sequel.

One of the best and compelling games I've played. A great mix of game play styles with open RPG elements, interesting FPS gameplay, and even on "linear" FPS levels, there are a broad range of choices and methods for completing each mission. Overall, the style, atmosphere and tone is fantastic. The only downside is that some of the non-essential npcs seem too scripted and distant, and overall the voice acting could have been better.
