After years of watching modern movies, I found the opportunity to check out Charlie Chaplin's filmography. I used to think these movies were just fluff, focusing on comedy but not having any substance beyond that. I was mistaken and found that Chaplin can pull off a well-told story and blend it with seriously funny moments as it goes. There is a lot to appreciate in this movie and ponder upon. One of the interesting things I found interesting is that this might be Chaplin's only science fiction movie with its representation of certain technologies. If that's the case then it is up there in my list of sci-fi movies. If you are just getting into Charlie Chaplin, this is one of the best movies to start with but, really, every Chaplin movie is a great way to start Chaplin.
Started with Modern Times and found the comic genius of Charlie Chaplin. I've seen his movies before but they were mostly a blur. Now that I have revisited them I found a newfound appreciation for this era (somewhat). From The Kid to The Gold Rush, all his movies have laughs and heart, something I never thought I'd find in comedies. City Lights takes the cake for me sharing a slice of it with Modern Times. The Tramp in some scenes might come off as a booze-drinking, cigar-chomping klutz but this is only because of his selflessness that leads him into these circumstances putting him in one comedic situation to another. What I love about this movie is the relationship he develops with a blind flower girl which blossoms (pun intended) into something pure and innocent. This contrasts his relationship with the millionaire who takes him galavanting, often leading into trouble. Don't let the lack of color and spoken dialogue fool you, this movie packs a lot of heartfelt moments, further cementing Charlie Chaplin's place in cinema history. Must watch.
Pixar continues to amaze. Full of emotions both figuratively and literally weaved into a unique story. It reassures fans that Pixar hasn't lost its touch. One of the best this year (2015).
Haven't seen the others but this sparked my interest for the franchise. Hugely entertaining and very action-packed. This could be a great representation of the series.
Must have been a strange movie back in the 70's. I watched this thinking it was going to be an action movie with lots of car chases (shame), not having seen the trailers or knowing anything about it. It became an instant favorite of mine and brought me to an understanding what a good movie really is. Robert de Niro in this role is phenomenal, as with every character in this. This is where dull moments are very effective and I enjoyed those too.
This was a pleasant surprise. Didn't expect much because I always found Disney-produced CGI films somewhere between 'okay' and 'good'. Wreck-It Ralph blew me away with its story and lively setting. It was heartwarming and fun, a combination I look for in these types of movies. I want to see this again.
Starts out great. The opening felt similar to how I saw Blade Runner but somewhere in the middle it drags and what happens doesn't really matter until the revelation. I respect Rian Johnson for pulling **** atmosphere but I just thought there were a lot of room for improvement in terms of pacing. Overall it is a good movie that shows a lot of potential for discussions. Maybe I just wanted to see more sci-fi.
The coolest film noir I've ever seen. It's way of telling a story is very effective and gets viewers to feel like they themselves have to solve the mystery. It is well written and is probably my favorite of all Christopher Nolan films.
A great commentary on consumerism. It's one with style and action. The characters are strangely interesting and the camerawork and effects are top-notch. This movie goes all out with its message, no holds barred.
It was the kind of adventure I was looking for. It had the same feel as the Fellowship of the Ring. I'll admit the ending could have been more conclusive as FOTR but I never thought it would make the movie that bad. Maybe I can understand a little how others might dislike it. In my opinion, t was good.
This took a while to come out but when it did, it was worth the long wait. New characters meant more excitement. In a way, it was bigger in scale compared to the first movie. Definitely a must see like its predecessor.
This was one of the movies of my childhood. If I watched this again, I can quote a few lines. That's how memorable the movie is to me. The story is perfect, the characters are lovable. Anyone who sees it knows why this was not only a technical achievement but a classic as well.
If there was a Pixar film I could trade for to see Pixar movies I missed in theaters, it would easily be Cars 2. Such a huge leap from the first movie. It lacked story and just sped by the running time with guns ablaze and cars exploding. I think the violence is justified here since most of the characters are vehicles but there is no reason to turn a sequel into an action film.
I was really excited for this because it would be the first I can root for a human protagonist (I wasn't a big fan of The Incredibles yet). Pixar upped the ante with this one as it takes the characters from a bustling city to the labyrinthine wilderness. It has the most touching opening of all the movies I've seen and things just get better as the movie progresses.
It closes the circle as one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time, for me at least. I was somewhat anxious how this would turn out but I should have trusted that Pixar is full of talented storytellers. It's hard to pick which movies in the series is my favorite but they are equally great.
Didn't like this when it first came out and ignored it when it aired on cable TV. I gave this movie another try and I realized what I was missing. This is a great family film. It's action-packed and most importantly its got a wonderful message that Pixar never fails to deliver.
This is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen. The dynamic between the characters is beautifully done. I still can't get around the fact that Kurosawa wrote each of the characters background just for this movie; now that's commitment. The story seems straightforward on the surface but it's the driving point of each characters development that is put into focus. Each performance is nuanced and even Mifune's seemingly goofy performance lies a history that drives to do what he does. One of my favorite movies and should not be missed.
