Fantastic. Unique art style, great platforming, great mechanics, good difficulty (it's hard), great boss fights. You can't ask for more.

It's a good ARPG, but it's a little repetitive. Spam the same skills over and over at hordes of enemies. Builds are interesting though, from spells to passives to items. It's undoubtedly better than Diablo 3 and 4, but I have seen better in the ARPG genre.

Ok puzzle game. I enjoyed it for a while, but don't feel the need or want to play it again, and it wasn't particularly memorable. Solo must be pretty boring, I think this must be played coop or just don't bother.

Great coop (local or online) party game. There aren't too many games that can compete in this category, but this is by no means only good because it doesn't have much competition. The concept is good, but simple. You're just always in a hurry and trying to coordinate with people that may not be as good at games as you.

I guess I just don't really care about this type of game anymore. It's not a bad game, but it's not great either. There's no real challenge in the game, just brainlessly bash on enemies until they die, make a semi-sensible team, but even if you don't it won't really matter. Class customization feels very minimal. Often there's just a downright better choice. I'd rather be playing an ARPG or a souls-like RPG. If you liked the story, all the power to you, I didn't care for it.

A cult classic that has aged very well as I replayed it in 2023. Some secrets are pretty hard to find, but the battle system, story and art have all kept up very well despite the age of the game. This game doesn't hold your hand as games back then didn't do that, so you will need to experiment, try different armor sets against different bosses to change your resists, try different elemental attacks to see the boss' resistances, etc.

This game's combat system is quite unique and much more interesting than most other turn-based combat system. Each class has skills that can only be used from certain positions, some being more flexible than others. As such, right from the get go, choosing your 4 party members and their position is already crucial to your survival. Additionally, new recruits will come with both positive and negative quirks. If you leave them there too long, they will become locked and permanent. So you need to manage your roster as much as possible and try to keep them in the best shape you can.

It's a good game, it just gets old fast for me. It's more for relaxed, laid back gaming with your IRL friends or friends you've known for a long time and just want to talk while not doing too much work. There are different kind of missions and decent variety in classes and weapons, but the bosses aren't that memorable and the main mechanics are usually just mining stuff, escorting a payload and extracting. The maps are randomly generated and the voxel system works very well, you can mine in any direction seemingly infinitely and you will frequently find people just cutting through walls, floors and ceilings.

It's honestly a pretty good survival game. Craft your base, make food, hunt a little bit. The random map generation is really nice and there are quite a lot of settings you can tweak if you want. My biggest negative is the combat. It is clunky and hitboxes are sometimes way off, and you kind of have to do combat at some point as after a while, some creatures will start to actively hunt you.

The game feels great to play. Very visceral, fast-paced action. You have to keep moving, shooting, changing gun and repeat. The finishers and chainsaw are very well made and make it feel much better, especially considering that they have actual functionality (health drops for finishers and chainsaw drops ammo). There is not much negative to say here. Perhaps the multiplayer could've been better for those that care about that.

It's a great deck builder that introduces a completely different mechanic to the traditional combat. Diplomacy might sound like it's just combat, but with a different name, but it is not so. Combat works as you'd expect from other games in the genre. Diplomacy, however, functions fundamentally different and has potentially multiple arguments you need to deal with, while also potentially dealing with or ignoring the "side objectives". It's a refreshing mode and you often get to choose between combat or diplomacy. This also features more choices than usual for this genre. Usually these choices end up making someone love or hate you, which can provide different benefits.

Dark Souls III10
Sep 24, 2023
This is the best Dark Souls IMO. I still remember multiple of the epic boss fights in here, most notably Pontiff, Unnamed King, Cinders and Freya. As usual for souls-like, the bosses make the game and this game had very good bosses. The rest of the game is what you can expect from a souls-like, it's good, but it's not the main object of the game. My one criticism would be that some bosses were too far from a checkpoint.

I will start with the simple fact that this game allows you to combine 2 classes together to make your builds. I'm a **** for these types of games, as it multiplies build variety. It feels like there are many potential end-game viable skills. More than the average for sure. I will say though, that the game is harder than typical ARPGs. It's not Dark Souls, but for me it's a good thing that it's a little harder than the average. However, if you're used (or want to) to face-rolling through huge hordes of enemies with no effort, while watching a show on the side, this might be a turn off for you. The items here are also more interesting than your typical Diablo 3 or Diablo 4 stat sticks. The uniques are interesting and many are build-defining. There's also a constellation skill tree similar to PoE (probably a little smaller) with many interesting possibilities that also help defining your build. After completing the highest difficulty, you can also bring your other characters straight to the highest difficulty and level them up much faster.

This is a great management and tactical combat game. War of the Chosen also adds so much interesting stuff that I feel it's a must. I usually get bored of tactical turn-based combat games very fast. This game, however, has the interesting aspect between missions that makes me want to keep playing and see how my campaign goes. This game is more of a campaign, but it still has random elements that will likely make you want to replay it. It's not quite a roguelike because the runs are too long (over 10 hours, more if you try to complete more stuff), but it has that feeling, due to the randomness of the map and events that show up. There's always something to do, and unfortunately, you won't have time to do everything. If you're a completionist, this might annoy you, but I found that it was interesting choices you had to make constantly.

Risk of Rain 28

It's a great roguelike shooter. The characters all feel significantly different, but my main problem is that they almost all want to build the same items anyway. It's still a fun game, and there are some cool modifiers to try, like the one that lets you choose your items, or the one that makes items drop from enemies instead of having X chests per level. Choosing your items is a little too powerful though, as you can just make the perfect build every time. This game really shines in multi-player with random item drops, as you can decide to leave certain items to certain people and assign your loot in a way you feel is optimal. The main problem in multiplayer is that if you die, you're just watching until next level. If you're player with someone much worse or much better than the rest of the group, it could be annoying for those that spend a lot of time dead. They also fall behind because they get no items while the person who's already stronger and managing to stay alive gets stronger by hoarding all items. Runs can last between 30 to 60 minutes, but you have the ability to loop infinitely, though at some point stuff will start to one-shot you. Overall, it's a fun game, and definitely not bad, but I find myself preferring Gunfire Reborn over this basically every time.

This is a great deck builder. The concept of combining 2 classes (or races) is always great and underused in games. It leaves so many potential combos, and surprisingly many of them work well. Each race has their unique cards and combining 2 races' cards leaves some interesting potential combos. Runs include a card selection after every encounter, as well as 2-3 activities of choice, including various types of shops, recruiting a unit, removing cards from your deck, copying a card in your deck, relics, special events, etc. There are also "challenges" that you can toggle on or off on some encounters to increase your reward, but also difficulty. These can be interesting because the extra rewards is not always worth it depending on the circumstances. This feels more complex than Slay the Spire and you need to manage which units you put at the front, which units on which floor, which enemies will skip a floor, etc. This is not that similar to Slay the Spire though, as you don't directly control a hero that attacks & casts spells, you summon units & use spells from the "outside". It's more about managing the battle, the 3 floors of your train and the health of your Pyre.

Gunfire Reborn10
Sep 24, 2023
The best roguelike FPS available right now. It feels a little like a Doom Eternal gone roguelike. The movement is fast with frequent dashes and the guns each feel completely different, not just a different recoil pattern. Most weapons are viable, though some are definitely better than others. All characters play differently and favor different kinds of guns. The weapon drops are interesting, the item properties are mostly very nice and you will frequently look at dropped weapons to consider them, it's not like most loot-driven games where 99% of what drops is instant-dismantle trash. The new horde mode is great (I honestly wasn't expecting a free update with this kind of big content drop). This is a game I have played over 100 hours and still go back to. There aren't many in this category (4, maybe 5 out of my 300-400 games library).

Soulstone Survivors8
Sep 24, 2023
This is one of the better "Survivor"-type game (or bullet heaven as some call them). It has more depth than the usual, requires manual aiming (though not firing) and player-input dodging/dashing. This was better than other games of the genre for me as I found the other ones where you only control movement too basic and limited. This one has may potential builds and classes, with a good meta-progression system, good difficulty options and mechanics that force you to move around and not just camp a corner of the map. The spells are varied, though some spells are very similar and come in different variants per element. Each element of spells has their unique spells too, though, and many builds are viable, though you will usually want to focus on what your class enables best (logically). I feel like you CAN sometimes get bad RNG and not get the spells you want, but you can add re-rolls to your spells with runes, and you can find spells infinitely until you decide you only want passive skills anymore. I find that getting unlucky doesn't really happen too often, you usually find something close enough to what you wanted that you can make do.

Above my expectations on basically every count and replayability is much higher than I was expecting. Know that this is basically a souls-like with guns. It will not be easy if you're not used to this kind of game, it's meant to be hard. All 3 regular worlds (N'Erud, Yaesha and Losomn) have 2 different storylines each, which will change the end boss. Each end boss has 2 to 4 potential ways to defeat it. Most zones are procedurally generated, so even though you may recognize some tiles after a few playthroughs, the map will still not be the same. All 3 regular worlds can be quickly replayed in adventure mode to explore areas you potentially didn't get before, get your missing items, farm materials, change difficulty, or just for fun. Each time you re-roll your campaign or adventure, you lose ONLY your quest items (and obviously, the world you had generated). There are many secrets in basically every zone, and some of them more complex than others. I recommend using the wiki to finish out your collection with what you may have missed by yourself. There are some that require getting specific items from different worlds in the same campaign, so I recommend checking those out to see if you can complete one of these rather hard to get items before re-rolling your campaign. Additionally, the dual class system leaves a lot of potential combinations of classes for interesting builds. Add to that the large amount of build-defining rings and amulets, and the unique weapons. Making builds is really fun. The weapon mods and mutators also let you customize your weapons to a degree (though most boss weapons come with a preset weapon mod). The storylines and lore were interesting enough for me to read everything on my first playthrough (I'm not much of a lore or story guy). Overall, I have played this game almost 150 hours in the first month that I got it. There aren't many games other than Destiny 2 that I play that much anymore.

Destiny 26

Raids, particularly duos and trios (as opposed to the regular 6-man teams) are really nice and engaging and require coordination and interesting mechanics for the most part. There is nothing really like Destiny raids in any other game out there currently. Even raids in Division 2 don't compare. Dungeons are fine, less engaging and more simple mechanics, but still not braindead. The rest is mostly braindead and gets boring very fast. The problem is that the vast majority of content is the braindead type. Only 1 new raid per year (and they bring back some old raids occasionally from Destiny 1), and 1-2 new dungeons per year. Balance passes are very slow and some exotic weapons and armor are left completely useless for years. Some reworks of useless armor make them even more useless. Many just OK items in PvE nerfed hard because of PvP and made useless in both modes. Some weapon classes are left completely behind. Pulse Rifles and Scout Rifles have been useless for years, and they are not getting buffed. They deal pitiful damage because they have the "advantage" of being long-range, but there is almost no long range encounters in the game as a whole.
