When I was younger I didn't get the appeal of horror movies. The whole "why would you pay money to be scared" thing. I was also poor. But the older I get, the more I'm completely bought-in to the genre. Horror movies speak a different visual language. They can get away with anything because the genre is so flexible. Seriously, is there anything your brain can't explain away if you saw it in a scary movie? Up is down. Left is right. Those are just the rules until this movie is over. Longlegs doesn't reinvent any wheels. There is a wolf at the door, and it's wearing sheep's clothing. It is familiar. Its references will be picked up by most movie fans. It's visual style and performances are what really stand out. Both are top notch. This is the kind of horror movie that makes you want to watch other horror movies. There are very few bars higher than that.

This is just hands down one of the best looking movies in recent memory. It’s a really unique style of animation, done at an expert level. It’s innovative and inventive, while remaining grounded. These characters feel like real people living out a remarkable story of loneliness and love. It’s wonderfully voice acted, beautifully rendered, and (although it can be a touch melodramatic) powerfully moving. Soundtrack is gas too.

My biggest problem with this movie is that it takes charming, funny, sexy actors and stiffs them with a script so corny and uninteresting it makes the characters and actors alike seem boring. Because the next Avengers movie has to save the MCU, these characters can’t be interesting people. They have to clear the MCUs throat before Doomsday in service of its broadest possible audience. That leaves these actors, and this viewer, in the cold. But if blue is your favorite color, damn you’re gonna love this.
