Do not watch "Chef" if you are hungry. Get something to eat and then watch it. It showcases Jon Favreau on fine form, as a director, writer and actor. His sharp script, succulent direction and warm lead performance (backed up by a charismatic ensemble) intersect to headline one of the unexpected marvels of the year, a comedy-drama of surprisingly soulful poignancy and wit. A true treat of a film, "Chef" deserves to be seen.

Though entertaining, "Cold Comes the Night" is ultimately forgettable, an afterthought, overly ambitious and failing to make the most of a talented cast.
