Alien: Isolation8

Great game, visually extremely well done, with a scary atmosphere, and one of the best sound systems I ever experienced in a game. I played it on Linux, ported by Feral, and runs divinely. It just suffers from an important flaw: the save system must get revised. Sometimes you re-play the same subpart of a mission over and over and over, because you cannot progress until you got to the next save station. The game is so well done that it does not need to cheat by trying to raise the suspance just by preventing save games. Or it could do so more smartly, e.g. allowing save games more frequently with the time spent on a mission subpart.

Very, very funny. It's easy to get acquainted with it, and very difficult to master. Nice graphics, possibility to play in local multiplayer up to four players with split-screen. Big plus: runs on Linux!

Top down 2D shooter with loads of brutality. Nice graphical desing, AMAZING soundtrack (among the best I've ever found in a videogame), alienating but amazing story line. It's like being in a movie co-authored by Lynch and Tarantino. You learn how to play by dying over and over. However, unlike many other games, it does not stress the player: the will of playing a level always overcomes the delusion of dying over and over. Warmly recommended.

More of the same Half-Life 2, plus there is Dog. Which means that is great game, and you should definitely play it. I have tested it under Linux, and it runs very well: if you play on such platform, grab it!

Half-Life9

I have played it again in December 2015 for two reasons: test my brand new Steam controller with a game created for mouse and keyboard, and see how it runs on Linux. Both things were extremely pleasant. And maybe surprisingly, the game didn't get as old as I would have supposed. Yes, the graphics is definitely vintage, but the gameplay is not: I'm not sure if there is some lack of ideas to evolve the genre, or it's just that Valve created such masterpiece that's hard to get anything better. Anyway, it should get played by any PC gamer, at least as part of your gaming cultural experience.

Pretty easy point and click game. Puzzles are not particularly challenging, most of the time is just look around for stuff. Good for killing time. Smooth under Linux.

Interesting mix of action and real time strategy, maybe more interesting than fun, interleaved by sessions of driving. The game is pretty open world, you are free to wander around, and there are side missions to complete. The main story is nice, and the music is... well, amazing. Technically good, very smooth on Linux. If you like metal music, give it a shot. It won't let you down.

Not a great racing game, some disciplines are just too random (like the demolition derby). However, it's one of the few racing games that runs well under Linux: if you use it for playing, then it is a reasonable choice.

It's a funny word game, with RPG elements (your character improves along the game). The main problem is that it gets repetitive pretty soon. On the other hand... it is a word game. Good thing: it runs on Linux, flawlessly. Only available in English: if it's not your first language (nor the language you want to train in) look elsewhere.

The game has technical problems: I didn't get audio under Linux, full screen mode made other application crash, there is no controller support. These problems ruined the gaming experience so deeply that it is hard for me to express an opinion about gameplay.

Bad game. Boring, unsurprising, and technically delusional. No audio nor fullscreen (tested on Linux). No tutorial: you start doing random things around. I do not realize how can possibly people assign 10/10 to this game: it got NOTHING to offer. I would not play it even if it was for free.

Dust: An Elysian Tail8

Very nice fast paced action platformer with RPG elements. Despite being a game available also on mobile, the graphics is extremely polished (2D surely helps a lot), and the game is solid and fast also on old systems, and also on not-so-common operating systems (I've played it entirely on Linux). The game can be enjoyed best with a gamepad, I used a Steam Controller and it worked like a charm. The plot is very enjoyable and the characters lovely (how can't you love Fidget?). The RPG elements are an interesting addition, that keeps the player more interested in the game. There are lots of easter eggs (if you have played Bastion or Fez, keep your eyes open...), and the map that tells you how much you have explored of each area saves the player from wasting lots of time in searching where nothing is present, or from giving up searching bonus and conclude the game. Overall, I warmly recommend it.

Bastion is a nice to-down game. It is funny to play, intense, and has the additional value of some RPG elements: your character improves with time, and that is a big incentive to keep playing. The graphics is nice, the sound is first class. Some of the background musing is really really good. Also, the game is technically well done, I have played it with a X360 controller under Linux flawlessly. It's major limit is the repetitiveness of the gaming: little more than choose weapons-get around-smash everything. Nice game, bit with little replay value.

Somehow more an introspectory trip than a first person puzzle. Puzzles exploit the world rules, which are not the same rules you are used to in your world. Learn step by step, exploit everything, and get to the rewarding end. Definitely worth your time and your money.

The other side of the tower defense: tower attack. Find out a path on a map such that you convoy is able to reach some milestones to complete a mission. Nice idea, but for some reason tower defense is generally WAY funnier. Also, poor plot. On the good side, the game is technically well realized, and runs flawlessly on Linux.

You are a box running in a tunnel, and you must avoid the blocks, moving along the floor, roof, and walls of the tunnel. Very simple concept for a very simple game, that (as many games like this) is pretty hard since the beginning, to compensate the lack of complexity. Becomes repetitive and boring very quickly.

A real time strategy game where you control some giants and use them to make a suitable environment of the rise of a civilization. It is a nice idea, and there are many possible combination, but the game is too slow paced to be fun for RTS addicts, and too simple for fans of management games.

The Inner World3

The game looks nice initially. Seems simple and funny. But it does have a number of problems due to its very nature: a port from phone/tablets to PC. I tried to play it in Linux, and I had to gave up pretty soon due to bugs that made the experience incredibly frustrating. I may give it a shot in a few months, hoping that they fix those Linux issues.

Really: what the heck is this? A girl going to a school for birds and trying to seduce one of them. The thing is pretty hilarious, and somehow funny. It is good at making the game initially interesting. I have made a single playtrough, completed the "game" with one possible ending, and that was pretty much enough for me. The reason is that the game is simply boring. Maybe is funny to some very small audience, to me is not.

FTL: Faster Than Light8
Mar 20, 2014
You cannot realise how funny is FTL until you really start playing it. It is just addictive, it is hard to tell yourself to quit playing and go to bed. The game itself seems very simple: you are in charge of micro-managing a single space ship (power, weapons, crew). It does not sound fun, does it? Well, it is! The difficulty levels are tuned perfectly, the beginner can start with easy and beat the game in a tenth of attempts, then switch to normal and,... well, the game really becomes challenging. Despite the fact that the technical realisation is all but awesome (seriously, a game stick to 1280x720 is not something of this millennium), it is impossible not to give this game a chance. Of course, if you are searching for a "shoot-everything-that-moves" game, look elsewhere.

I does not work with pulseaudio. I was lucky enough to spot the issue, but this is unacceptable. The game itself is funny for some time, then the game mechanic offers few novelties, everything resolves to trying over and over the same combos with the joypad.
