What’s really amazing about the show is what it does with these complex, layered individuals: It tells one hell of a story.

The series’ scope is expanding, and its formal qualities are tightening. This is a strong batch of episodes that present a narrative confident in where it’s heading. Which is all to say: Halfway through this season, consider us hooked.

I find being entertained by television very difficult. To captured my attention from beginning to end. I would recommend to anyone.

With style, intelligence and mystery to spare, Tokyo Vice is the kind of sprawling crime drama that actually lives up to the label of ‘prestige’ TV.

“Tokyo Vice” assert[s] itself as a significant new entry in the crime-drama canon. ... A beautifully shot and elegantly acted series that can seem at times to power past its writing. The pilot so effectively conjures the disorientation and novelty of a new place that the fish-out-of-water storyline feels somewhat new.

Despite some fatty dialogue and overly earnest performances—or perhaps, unevenly earnest performances—season 2 finds traction. (Only five of 10 episodes were made available for review.) .... There are multiple subplots in "Tokyo Vice," all of which are destined to coalesce. En route to a melding, however, they require one's complete attention, if not a clipboard.

While Tokyo Vice takes some time for its characters to break out of their archetypal molds, though, it relishes in creating beautiful spaces.

For all its visual pleasures, “Tokyo Vice” is guilty of sidelining its most fascinating characters.

favorite show of the year. great characters that learn, grow, and develop. immersive environments that make you feel like you're there. beware having uncontrollable urges to eat japanese food or travel to japan.

All the neon noir atmospherics can't cover up the weakness of the story, which is your crusading reporter vs. mobsters. What really drags the series down, however, is the lead, Elgort. This boy can't act. I understand his character exhibits the naivete of youth and an outsider, but the way Elgort blurts out his lines is cringe-inducing. Too bad they didn't focus more on Watanabe's character.

Such a mixed bag. In general the Japanese actors and storylines are engaging. The American actors are terrible, stupid, and deeply unlikable. Not enough Michael Mann in this Michael Mann project.

Look, I can't deny that this is a pretty well-made show. It's well shot, fairly decently acted... but it didn't draw me in at all. After the first episode, I decided that was enough. There's too much really good television out there (much of which I still need to catch up on, like Better Call Saul) for me to spend time watching something with a story and characters that I couldn't care less about.
