It’s difficult to think of any film that speaks to our moment as strikingly as this documentary does, a quality evident early on. ... [Scenes of men's] complaints about, for instance, the pain of having to listen regularly to a woman’s voice are in their hellish way priceless and not to be missed. The same goes for all four hours of this never less than mesmerizing film.

Love her or hate her, one thing we can agree on is that she’s essential to telling the story of world politics in the last half-century. And “Hillary” is the most accomplished version of her story so far.

Hillary gives viewers the chance to go beyond soundbites and stereotypes, if they dare.

There are very few facts in "Hillary" that other documentaries, whether solid or entirely unreliable, haven't covered in some fashion. But what Burstein offers that previous works don't is an emotional journey through Clinton's life in her words and those of her family and friends, some 45 of them (including Barack Obama, her main Democratic rival in the 2008 election) and not all of them entirely without criticism.

It’s remarkably in-depth and at times revelatory, but a couple of missteps keep it from being truly insightful.

As a whole, “Hillary” is a fittingly messy, compelling portrait of an equally messy, compelling person with some moments that will no doubt provide even more fodder for the endless speculation about her private thoughts and motivations. But it could have been so much more.

Cold open... Hillary drinking water from a glass getting ready to start the documentary's interview in 2019.
Then cut to the opening credits and music... power-pop-punk What's Your Plan by The Interrupters. OK, maybe jazz the subject up with a little power-pop, ultra-fast edit cuts, etc. I doubt I'm going to learn anything by watching this 4 part, 4 hour documentary - but, I've been cooped up at home waiting out covid-19 and I'm down to watching things like Netflix's Extraction. I guess I'm curious to see if this is good documentary work or documentary entertainment or pseudo-documentary or... whatever. There are 4, 1-hour episodes. I have no expectations that I'll make it through the first episode. I really just want to get a sense of the quality of the effort and then go do something else.
And, I ended up watching all 4 episodes straight through with no breaks.
Not because it was a great documentary or because Hillary is such an interesting personality - but, I'm a little bit of a history buff.
When there was a short piece about her "student speech" at her graduation from Wellesley, I realized there was more to Hillary than I had picked up on over the last 30 years.
And, I had missed the ramifications of when she changed her name to Clinton after not changing it when she was married. So, this is not a documentary with a lot of penetrating analysis.
It basically lays out the key things within Hillary's life with some short current day reactions from Hillary.
So, mixing in some NY Times and Washington Post reflection along with friends and associates of Hillary you get Hillary's point of view.
It is up to the viewer to provide the analysis - and, I don't mind doing that.
