Casual may seem like another snarky commentary on modern romance, but its dirty little secret, and the reason it more than sustains itself in a second season (and, Hulu willing, many more to come), is that the main characters quixotically believe they can fix themselves.

Casual still stands out among this group [of lo-fi dramas] because the writing and performances are so specific and so smart that it doesn't feel like a spin-off of six other shows.

Watching their [Alex and Laura's] relationship deepen is a highlight. [3 Jun 2016, p.102]

Season two proves emphatically (having seen six of the 10) that the first was no fluke.

Casual leans a little too easily into some familiar elements. Still, the psychological through-lines hold up, allowing the series a bit of leeway while sifting through territory a bit beneath its overall ambition.

All in all, Casual’s thematic restart is one that broadens the show in the best of ways. It allows the characters to wade in interesting new waters, without skimping on the bad behavior and quips about Treme that attracted audiences to the show’s first season.

Casual proceeds from a place of diffidence, of setting up the mildest of jokes and seeing how softly the show can make them land.

The show was entertaining, the characters interesting. However, there comes a point when you realize, that every attempt of the lead characters at having a lasting relationship is doomed to fail within what feels like a couple of weeks, the show becomes predictable and boring. Sure, you may want to know how exactly the relationships will crash and burn, but why should I get invested in new plotlines with new love interests when it's going to be over soon, anyway?
