Anthology 4 offers another transporting parallel view into how The Beatles did what they did, from the pre-fame beginnings to the end and after. [Dec 2025, p.12]

Superb. .... The heart of Anthology 4 is the previously unheard material. There’s a revelatory first take of “In My Life,” with John thinking the song out loud, screwing up his courage, with Paul’s harmony and Ringo’s drums providing the brotherly support he needs. He never sounded more naked. “I’ve Just Seen A Face” is all madcap comic energy.

If there’s a lack of truly revelatory alternative takes, then Anthology 4 makes up for this by shining a light on The Beatles as people, and as studio musicians.

The existence of all these already issued tracks makes this collection lean more towards the casual fan, though the more dedicated will probably want to hear the acoustic takes, instrumentals, overdub sessions, and rehearsals that make their official debut here. There are definitely enough quality rarities to make the duplication less painful.

As a collection, Anthology 4 charts a parallel path through the Beatles’ career, one with a tacky postscript in the 21st century. As a Beatles record, it is not very good, offering nothing exciting in terms of rarities (wow, the “strings only” version of Something from the Abbey Road 50th anniversary edition) or insight.
