I daresay this one was worth the wait. Though darker, visually and emotionally, than part one, and shorter — two hours and 18 minutes, down from two-forty — Wicked: For Good is still a rollicking good time.

Once again, Nathan Crowley’s production design is wondrous, a multi-colour extravaganza that truly brings Oz to life. Simply spending time there – with its fields of tulips and fireworks in the sky – is one of the great pleasures of this movie. A film that will surely satisfy Wicked’s extensive army of devotees.

Cons: I honestly have nothing bad to say about this movie. The time skip from the first movie annoyed me a bit, but it was constrained to follow the events of the Broadway play, so it's not really this movie's fault for that. Pros: This movie is an emotional roller coaster. It had me tearing up quite a bit, especially when Glinda and Elphaba were singing goodbye to each other at the end. The chemistry between Elphaba and Fiyero was off the charts, which was something I was not expecting. Their private romantic moment together felt earned and passionate. Madame Morrible was as menacing as ever, and that scene where she created the tornado gave me chills. Jeff Goldblum's Wizard of Oz continued to be conniving and was a fun villain to root against. Finally, this movie managed to capture the darkness of everyone's fates after graduating from **** University. One dark scene that particularly stood out to me was the scene where Boq turned into the Tin Man. It was a tough scene to watch him transform so gruesomely.

Even though the story in this half is weaker than the first half, Wicked: For Good is still incredible and helps you get into the wicked world in a more detailed way, the new songs "The Girl in the Bubble" and "No Place Like Home" help us understand where Glinda and Elphaba feel at those moments and why they act that way now, it also expands them as characters, so they were wonderful additions to the second half of Wicked.

Wicked: For Good is a lovely ode to the beauty of female friendship, the spirit of individuality, the power of goodness in the face of authoritarianism, and the influence one true friend can have on an individual to grow into their full potential.

Suffice it to say that those who love the play will sit enraptured through Wicked for Good and not think it’s a minute too long. Those without the same depth of connection may leave wishing Chu had hired a less generous editor and made better use of his pruning shears.

The Reveal
The sturdiness of Elphaba and Glinda’s bond throughout these tragic miscues—and Erivo and Grande’s fine dramatic and vocal performances—give this rickety enterprise a solid foundation.

While Wicked: For Good repeats much of the same formula as the first picture, there is a crucial ingredient missing: humour. Without it, the spark is extinguished; the astringency that cut through the sentimentality of the first picture is gone.

A second instalment of the Oz origin movie is bloated and boring despite new songs for both Elphaba and Glinda.

The short review: The Wicked story continues and incorporates the story arc from the original The Wizard of Oz. It drags, has much more singing of unfamiliar songs and has a story with unconvincing dynamics. Cons: #1: A con that is not apparent in Part 1 of Wicked is that when both parts are combined, they are nearly twice as long as the stage show. While Part 2 is much shorter than Part 1, Part 2 felt unnecessarily long because of the unconvincing story. #2: The singing scenes were bearable in Part 1 because the songs felt fresh and different. In Part 2, it felt like that I was watching a musical. Ahem... #3: The incorporation of the story arc of The Wizard of Oz here wasn't executed well. They should have made Dorothy a more significant character because they way they did it felt odd. They should also have spent more time on this incorporation, such as the entire Part 2. #4: (I am avoiding spoilers) The dynamics between the Wizard, Elphaba and Glinda, and between the latter two felt unconvincing. The same goes for how the Prince did what he did.

Wicked: For Good is a morose conclusion to this duology, which has been theme park filmmaking at its worst. What saves it are the heartfelt performances of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo and a handful of good songs. Dorothy deserved better. Mildly recommended. detroitcineaste

Sadly, as a sequel, it is held to a similar bar as the first movie. This time around the music was forgettable and the plot was messy. The visuals were still great, but the characters in the movie lacked depth and dimension. Elphaba was well played, but the good witch lost all of her charm and humor and was more of a love lorn fanatic than anything. I saw the play many years ago, and I think they had trouble translating it to big screen. There was no immersive element to Oz, all of the scenes felt like “sets”, establishing shots followed my close ups and very little else. All in all, none of the girls in my party could really describe the two hour plot at the end, but all of them liked it. For me, i did not mind sitting there with my nachos, but Wicked For Good just was not engaging or entertaining.
