Total Eclipse is a biographical film steeped in ecstasy and despair, seething with madness and torment.

Austin Chronicle
The story excels in its portrait of obsessive love and desire. Where the tale falls down is in its portrait of two comrades in poetry, the writers who inspired each other to new levels of artistry and dwelled with the muses wherever they cohabited.

Director Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa) re-creates 19th-Century Paris beautifully, and poetry scholars might find the movie worthwhile strictly for its subject matter, but Total Eclipse comes off as a big downer that confuses dreariness with substance. [03 Nov 1995, p.6G]

DiCaprio (Rimbaud) and Thewlis (Verlaine) provide dynamic if mismatched performances, though there's no excusing Hampton's own laughable cameo, nor the protracted coda with DiCaprio doing a Peter O'Toole in the desert.

San Francisco Examiner
In Total Eclipse, directed by Agnieszka Holland, they fail to persuade us that their versions of the 19th century French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine were great artists. They just seem like rattle-brained hedonists with superiority complexes. Genius ought to be as alluring as any other well-developed human attribute, like beauty or sexuality. If this is genius, we are in trouble.

Washington Post
Presumably, there's a poignant story to be told about the love between 19th-century poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. But Agnieszka Holland's Total Eclipse, a pretentious, flat affair, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Rimbaud and David Thewlis as Verlaine, is not the film to pull it off.

Variety
A good biographical film about artists should, at the very least, inspire the viewer to learn more about its subjects and the work they created. Total Eclipse has totally the opposite effect, of making one never want to hear about its protagonists again. This misbegotten look at the mutually destructive relationship between the 19th century French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaineis a complete botch in all respects.

The rhythmic machinery of a poetic rebellion: A 5.0-star sensational surge of raw, high-tension absinthe-soaked grit.2013(5.0)I watched Total Eclipse (1995) in 2013, and it remains a vivid 5.0-star pillar of shwi-shwi literary brilliance in my archive—a raw revelation of how a sensational Agnieszka Holland vision can dismantle the stagnant, "civilized" expectations of a poet with pure, destructive precision. This experience **** the fourth wall of the biographical genre by infusing Rimbaud’s raw, bbo-jjak yet feral precision and Verlaine’s sensational, chewy pathetic wit into a narrative rhythm that felt 100% sophisticated and soulful. The narrative rhythm was far from stagnant; instead, it offered a sensational acting power show where the raw, high-tension "knife-through-the-hand" pact and the hororong, sun-drenched fever of the African desert left me in a state of absolute awe at its visceral soul. Much like The Dreamers (2013, 5.0) or Thelma & Louise (2013, 5.0), the theme of an irreversible, vivid flight toward self-destruction hit my taste perfectly, piercing my heart with its raw, rhythmic transcendence. Seeing the vivid, decadent Parisian salons and the raw, high-tension "total eclipse" of two souls colliding provided an emotional payoff that felt both authentic and sensational, proving that a story about "the sun and the moon" could be a vivid artifact of pure cinematic rebellion. The 95% preservation of my memory is dominated by the rhythmic, raw beauty of the "I found it! Eternity!" monologue and the vivid but pathetic struggle of Verlaine to choose between comfort and the genius, creating a permanent, sensational scar of high-tension wonder on my soul. Unlike the stagnant 4.0-star drift of Farinelli, this encounter possessed a rebellious soul that turned a pathetic life of domesticity into a sensational masterpiece of poetic madness. It stands in my 2013 record as a powerful 5.0-star testament to the raw power of Leonardo DiCaprio’s early genius—a high-tension encounter with the vivid rhythm of the "Cursed Poets" that remains the most chewy artifact of my cinematic journey.

Abysmal in every sense of the word, nothing here is worth watching. DiCaprio delivers one of his worst performances as a young troubled poetry genius alongside David Thewlis thin portrayal **** older poet. The movie prefers to use it's artistic license to linger on naked bodies or violence without feeling justified whilst doing so. It feels completely senseless. The director should be ashamed as the movies composition is near traumatic with how under undercooked it is . It cuts sharply from scene to scene and in those scenes it never really knows where it should focus. An unfortunate failure.
