Every action in this Cannes award-winner is motivated if not wholly rational. Every consequence grimly believable and shorn of artifice and melodrama.

The film’s placid aesthetics help the directors strip away any artificial barriers between the audience and their subjects, thereby eliciting immense, compassionate engagement with Tori and Lokita’s plight.

Moving, politically committed and with an absolute ring of hard-researched reality, this is at the very least their finest since 2011’s The Kid With The Bike, and arguably one of their very best.

The latest film from the Dardenne brothers, a heart-rending tale of misused immigrants in contemporary Belgium, arrives just two weeks after Frank Berry’s Aisha pondered similar misfortunes in Ireland. Both are roughly in the social-realist mode, but the tone and the perspectives are quite different.

Tori and Lokita initially feels like something special as it breathlessly moves through the story, drawing you in utmost empathy towards the characters who are so bravely trying to claw themselves to dignity. But there’s this residue you can’t escape, of just how written and jerry-rigged it all seems: how the filmmaking has sacrificed that vital sense of plausibility just to keep the plates of story spinning, and the catharsis on the verge of spiking.

There is a simplicity and clarity of purpose here that I responded to and the Dardennes have got excellent performances from their young leads.

The film subjects its main characters to one indignity after another, and to such a suffocating degree that it crosses the line between representation and exploitation.

A strong & bold piece of cinema, reminds me of 7 Prisoners. Although it grabs your attention for most of the part, it falters at times. I believe climax required some more work, but a promising piece of work, regardless.

(Mauro Lanari)
Do you all remember the images of smugglers' trucks full of dead migrants? Disappeared from newspapers and television news. Chaplinian anthropology: "Despair is a narcotic. It lulls the mind into indifference" ("Monsieur Verdoux", 1947). "One death is a tragedy, a million is statistics" (misattributed to Stalin). The crime chronicle overflows with small little nefarious events with which perhaps someone still feels empathy, when then the number rises to the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th power, is transmuted into a cynical and cheating destiny. The Dardennes don't care and with their films they give to the beautiful souls of the red carpets what the confessional gives (gave) to the Christian Democrats: the opportunity of feeling cleansed to start again immediately after. Booed at Cannes, only 9 comments on IMDb, less than $600,000 in receipts. That's good: we can sing Branduardi's nursery rhyme with them.
