The story’s conventional beats (the get-back-in-shape montage, the bad news delivered at a critical moment) cohere into a wholesome journey of long-delayed healing. The inclusion of the wonderful Mykelti Williamson, as Joe’s longtime friend and rodeo partner, injects a buddy-movie vibe that anchors the action in riding bouts that are smoothly thrilling without being punishing.

If the characters aren’t three-dimensional and the plot is so predictable it creaks into motion by the five-minute mark. you haven’t done the work necessary to pull in your audience. You’ve got to give us something to hang our cowboy hats on.

A heartfelt and engaging film that appeals to 'the better angels of our nature'. It is highly entertaining, and also imparts a vital message to its audience. The story of self-sacrifice and the importance of family - even a broken family - is as old as **** yet one that we all need to be reminded of. Our world needs more films like this one. Suitable for anyone 10 years old or up.

‘The Last Rodeo’ is actually a pretty darn good movie. Yeah, it’s a bit sappy and yeah, it’s a bit predictable, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an enjoyable film that’s worth your time. The main cast was fantastic, and Neil McDonough can show more expressions and believability with his eyes alone than many actors can do by reading lines. The man really is a great actor, and he made me believe that really was his grandson, that his grandson was in danger of the same death as the grandmother that he didn’t get to know and that still haunted Joe all these years later. His daughter Sal and his former best friend Charlie were excellent, and Chris ‘Shooter!”

“The Last Rodeo” is a movie that explores a narrative genre with much unrealized potential in story telling that follows a desperate grandfather entering a dangerous competition to raise the funds for his grandson’s brain tumor removal surgery. However, while this premise sells easily to audiences and the intense scenes stick their landings smoothly, the important moments that are supposed to pitch a grand slam to the rest of the plot are far too dull to fully invest the audience in the stakes of this conflict. Angel Studios clearly has the best intentions behind their films, but soon needs to start taking bigger risks in future projects.
