SummaryIn June 1943, Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels infamously declared Berlin “free of Jews.” Little known is that there were still 7,000 German Jews in hiding. This is the true story of four young people among the 1,700 of Berlin’s Jews who ultimately survived until liberation.

The ironic twist at the movie’s end is a nice touch. The Invisibles, about humans as living ghosts, needs to be seen, and believed.

The Invisibles is part documentary and part feature film. For most of the movie, it's a good thing.

Although this movie’s unusual mix of first-person interviews, archival footage, voiceover narration and dramatic reenactments is a bit awkward, it still makes for a gripping, involving and affecting experience.

The Invisibles favors quantity of remembrance over quality of any one experience.

A film like The Invisibles is part of bearing "precise witness." We clearly need reminders, and constant ones, of the end result of "otherizing" an entire group of people.

Neither version of the film — the talking-heads documentary or the period drama — has the depth to achieve much impact.

The film doesn’t bring to light otherwise unexplored aspects of the experience or memory of persecution and genocide.

This film starts as a compelling drama about young Jews who chose to hide from **** in Berlin. All of a sudden, you're introduced to survivors recounting the story in their own words, which begins the back-and-forth style of this hybrid docu-drama. The interviews provide a personal angle to the stories, but they also get in the way of creating any real tension in the dramatic re-enactments. There's a taste of mild suspense once or twice, but the documentary elements dominate the narrative. Even so, these stories of bravery add an interesting new angle to the plight of the persecuted during World War II.
