What makes Sinners, set in 1932 Clarksdale Mississippi, so effective—so chilling, so hypnotic, and occasionally so grimly funny—is the way it yields to mystery, never seeking to overexplain.

Perfect build up, establishing its characters, build up emotional connection to the core characters so that when their deaths happen, you actually feel something. Smoke and Annie easily were my favorites. Remmek was a great villain with an actually pulling message. Not just trying to kill people for the hell of it, but actually giving them some truth as to why they should all join him. If a sequel does happen, I hope it picks up right where they left off in the 90s to the 2000s. But if its a prequel that comes next, I hope it shows more of Remmek's story and beginning.

Sinners is one of the most distinctive, confident mainstream films of the modern era, but it nonetheless leaves an audience with the tacit reminder of the limits of art to set one free in a system that profits as much off its exploitation as that of manual labor.

I wanted to love Sinners more than I did but the energy level is so infectious that it’s impossible not to get swept up and pulled in. It’s a sloppy concoction that carves out a new niche for vampires not unlike what Let the Right One In achieved.

Coogler introduces themes, agendas and histories in collision with this film. But once “Sinners” transitions from Black history at a crossroads into straight-up horror, nothing much is made of the Big Ideas in this ungainly mashup of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Crossroads” and “From Dust Til Dawn.”

Based solely on the acting and cinematography, this film is probably the best picture of the year. But the script is a kind of heterogeneous mix between a promising horror film (which, however, becomes predictable in that old story of someone who lets the enemy in) and a wild wild western thing. The first part has a mystique and beauty that I wish I had seen more of. The ending is disappointing and predictable. The soundtrack is fantastic, and the cinematography is very well thought out. I really wish this film hadn't become a cliché of guns and male sweat.

A slightly above average vampire film, based on the acting being ok. The story was predictable, and it added nothing new to the genre. The vampire 'make-up' has been done far better in other films. Slightly tired blaxploitation theme (again) - I get the feeling the makers of the film thought that they were being original, but they're really not. Not sure I'd bother watching it agin.

Serviceable vampire flick and racist propaganda, if that is your cup of tea. The pathological obsession with "race" of U.S. society really is something to behold — and avoid. A culture seemingly in terminal decline.

This movie is awful. The first hour is boring nonsense. Then you realize the movie is about cultural appropriation with the white vampires stealing the culture from the cool blacks, which is ironic since this movie is just an appropriation of From Dusk to Dawn but with no interesting characters. We were so gaslit on this movie. It **** (blood and ass).
