But here they’re all still young and flannel-y and full of hope—and nobody needs an app for that.

Mr. Crowe (who wrote "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and directed "Say Anything") has an exceptional ability to enjoy such characters without a trace of condescension

Singles is a bright and beautiful piffle about love American-style, junior division.

Crowe and his movie leave you with a good and generous feeling. As the Matt Dillon character might say, it's a pretty good hang. [18 Sept 1992, p.C1]

A pleasant mix of quiet comedy and sweet romance born of a sharp eye for contemporary mores. [10 Sept 1992]

Singles is never dull; Crowe keeps the pace moving with gimmicky devices such as direct address, flashbacks and catchy title frames to introduce new segments. The result is a chummy movie about a group of singles hurtling toward a fairy-tale ending. It's pleasant enough, but fans of Crowe will probably crave more. [18 Sept 1992, p.G5]

Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it's just cute. In the editing, the characters, general style and attitude, Crowe seems to have drawn heavily from Slacker for inspiration, but in his insecure reliance on traditional narrative and Hollywood convention, he undermines his more interesting experimentations. As a result, Singles winds up being a date movie with pretensions.
