Red Sonja is classic high adventure that earns the gold in its pocket by spilling blood the way that only a woman can.

By the film's end, both the film and its titular protagonist become honed, complex, and much-improved. It's an inconsistent sword-and-sandal epic, but one that lands some major notes as the sequences and combat get bigger, bolder, and feature better grounded performances.

M.J. Bassett’s Red Sonja (2025) swings for a nostalgic return to sword-and-sorcery cinema, but the result is uneven. Matilda Lutz delivers a committed lead performance that gives the film a pulse, yet the weak script, choppy pacing, and underwhelming fight choreography strip away much of the character’s iconic grit. While there are flashes of campy fun and a few nods to 80s fantasy charm, the film struggles to balance its feminist themes with the raw, visceral energy fans expect. Ultimately, it’s a watchable but underwhelming reboot that fails to capture the true fire of Red Sonja.

A so bad it's almost good movie. Yeah almost nothing about this films works. It's like a rubbish version of Xenia Warrior princess that takes itself way too seriously, has at best B tier actors and has massive plot logic problems. So much of it is so bad that I should rate it much lower, but I honestly enjoyed how rubbish it was (much like with the room). It's much more fun to laugh at it and it would make for a great movie to watch and laugh at with friends. The only thing it did correctly is put Sonja in a bikini armour for most of the film.

Although she lacks the imposing height and fierce muscularity of Nielsen, her predecessor in the role, Lutz makes up for it with impressive physicality and excellent thespian skills, the latter of which come in handy while she’s striving to keep a straight face during the absurd events here.

The action sequences, which are what made the original Sonja so indelible (especially since Nielsen had Arnold Schwarzenegger as a co-star), are a bit more rote. But someone somewhere must have done a punch-up on the script, because every now and then a reasonably witty quip arrives out of nowhere before the dialogue reverts to faux medieval speak.

Boring generic girlboss movie, with overuse of CGI, lame main villain, pg13 violence, dirty, yet oddly perfect female lead, who is just more powerful and stronger than any bodybuilder goon that faces her, and an odd new age hippy romance between Sonja and her... horse.
Yes. Sonja is very much in love with her horse. They frolic around take baths together, sleep on top of each other.
Beautiful.
But hey! As long as all men are depicted as both evil, and pathetic, violent, but weak at the same time, it is all good! For some.
Don't forget the ham-fisted environmentalist message about how technology is evil, and neo-paganism is the way - from the people, who can't live without their smartphones.

Schlock remake of a schlock film. The original Red Sonja was a Conan offshoot that didn't really work all that well. Conan had humor amidst the carnage and that was unfortunately absent from the original. This just looks like a slapped together version of a mediocre movie trying to create a female Conan. It can't even manage "so bad it's good."
