The remarkable Queen & Slim is a romance and a road movie, a film about outlaws on the run, two journeys of self-discovery and a nuanced social commentary. It’s not perfect but it’s close — an urgent, beautiful and socially conscious trip through the American racial psyche in 2019.

A Felliniesque meditation and celebration of the Black experience in America. Melina Matsoukas’ debut film is best known as the director of Beyonce’s “Formation” video—this drama depicts a way of life unseen by white America.

Queen & Slim is consciously political – powerfully so – but it is simple human survival that drives the two protagonists.

Violent and sexy, balanced between hope and despair, definably too-much and unapologetically mythic. The road is bumpy, but what a trip.

Queen & Slim is strongest when it lets the images and the acting do the lion’s share of the talking.

Some of the stylistic flourishes are delightful. Others work too hard for their own good.

It's clear this film is a debut despite the experience the director have making music videos but even so this was better than I expected and that will always be something nice. Maybe the biggest problem is how the story resigns to show something well know about the dangers of living while black but never tries to go into another direction and that to me was disappointing because I don't deny what african-americans suffer in the US but I don't think their stories when they involve this sort of narratives should always embrace that thematic. Just a personal thought.

Add this twosome to the classic outlaw duos like Thelma and Lousie and Bonnie and Clyde. When the movie starts, Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith play a black couple on a bad date. After he kills a cop in self-defense, they go on the run. During their plight, they garner the support of their community and even become a cause. Expectedly, they come to appreciate each other, as do we. There are flaws in the logic and the drama sometimes gets overwrought, but the script from Lena Waithe and the directorial debut from Melina Matsoukas combine to create a compelling new take on a classic narrative.
