Moonlight is a quietly introspective depiction steeped in unparalleled honesty of the ways in which we’re saved and damned throughout our lives.
75
A disturbing and daring thriller with an exceptional performance by 13-year-old Laurien Van den Broeck.
70
Laurien van den Broeck's masterful unblinking performance transcends the uneasy all-English dialogue.
63
A wild dream that spins into a nightmare, Moonlight isn't quite as provocative as it aims to be. But it will stick in your mind, and may even disturb your sleep.
60
Though rife with topics and images American audiences may find offensive, Moonlight addresses them fearlessly and with some artistry.
40
Not only is the candid (but never prurient) treatment of early-teen sexuality and drug use too hot to handle, but the narrative blend of fairy-tale wonder and nightmare logic feels sui generis.
40
Menacing atmosphere created by Dutch helmer Paula van der Oest ("Zus & Zo") does not make up for the weak script's multiple improbabilities, flat dialogue or the discomfort of watching children, the handicapped and even animals being abused onscreen.

Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins, is a moving film that explores themes of identity, masculinity and acceptance with a poetic and impactful sensitivity. The plot follows Chiron's journey through three crucial moments in his life - childhood, adolescence and adulthood - revealing his internal and external struggles to find his place in an environment marked by violence and marginalization. The performances of Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders and Alex Hibbert, who play Chiron at different stages, are moving and full of emotion.A more than discussing masculinity and sexuality, Moonlight leads us to reflect on how we shape our identity in a world that often prevents us from being ourselves. The film also explores interpersonal relationships in depth, bringing up issues of love, abandonment and the emotional scars we carry throughout our lives. It's a powerful and moving work that challenges the viewer to look at the complexity of the human being in a more empathetic and truthful way.
