The story is simple, and the narrative still manages to be muddled here and there, especially towards the end. But Moon Garden is a dazzling use of various effects and animation techniques to tell a child’s-eye-view story of purgatory, or something awfully close to it.

It's very rare to see a movie so heart breaking and disturbing and actually want to watch it again. This is like a mixture of Mad God and Mirrormask. Every image is hauntingly beautiful and every idea is deeply, deeply upsetting. The main actor is possibly the best example of child acting (and directing of) that's been done in the past half a century. Skip if you don't like horror or capital T trauma in your movies. Otherwise, unmissable.

If something with fairly low production values can still engage you and be visually stunning, that's an achievement. Add some very good acting and writing and you've got a classic. Kudos to young Haven Lee Harris, she carried an amazing, independent film extremely well on those little shoulders. Everyone else was great too so that is saying something.
