Women, men, relationships, the patriarchy feminism, nature, and body-horror merge in writer/director Alex Garland’s creepy, allegorical art-house horror thriller Men.

Men is the most visceral and organic dive into the curse of human nature that [Garland's] made yet. But it’s like each of his movies, filling in the question of what it means to be human — and to keep living on this planet — stroke by stroke.

As a man who loves folk horror, I liked this one a lot. Well acted, realistic portrayal of trauma and abusive relationships. It was freaky too. What most people whining about neo-feminist propaganda aren’t smart enough to understand is that this is a folk horror based on gods/goddesses/archetypes that have existed pre-Christianity. The director does an excellent job of bringing these archetypes to life in modern times.

There are times when Men comes across as being trippy and bizarre for the sake of easy scares, but thanks to Garland’s keen sense of pacing, the typically outstanding work from Jessie Buckley as our heroine and a staggeringly good, multi-character performance by Rory Kinnear, this is unlike any other film this year.

It is exciting to watch a writer and director like Garland take a huge swing like Men, even if it doesn’t entirely hold together as tightly as something like Ex Machina or Annihilation. Men is certainly more about asking questions than providing answers, a challenging, strange, and often horrendous journey that certainly doesn’t hold back in terms of weirdness, and wants to crawl into the viewer’s brain.

Alex Garland once again shows an unmatched ability to conjure a beautifully uneasy atmosphere, the sense of which lingers on past the closing credits — but the substance underneath doesn’t quite connect.

What a waste of a superb actress. Buckley almost makes Men worth sitting through. Almost.

The problem with Men isn’t with the acting. It’s with a script that could be described as attempting at something like arty horror and can’t stick the landing. Often it is tedious, slow to build and pretentious.

This movie was brilliant. Alex Garland has done something very few filmmakers have done before. He captured feelings that are impossible to describe. The performances are beyond excellent, the cinematography is gorgeous and the ending had me believing in cinema again. Thank you ALEX! Watch it! Give it all the awards!

An atmospheric exercise in nothingness. The script feels rushed and the themes aren't particularly well-developed. On the other hand, there are interesting shots, sound design, good performances, and unique body horror. By the end, I actually ended up kind of liking it.

Over the top arthouse horror with 'messaging' for the modern day. Another director thinking he is smarter than he actually is and a movie I cannot believe got greenlit to be made. It is a case of being on the nose as can be. Acting is great from the cast, but this movie is so horribly conceived to send a message that its Title details for Men to learn from their habits. ITs barely watchable.
