SummaryDave Ming Chang, newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There's something about him that's not quite right - for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: "Dave" is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. It's little Edd... Read More

this unfairly maligned sci-fi comedy testifies that Eddie Murphy still has the gift of surprise.

Meet Dave isn't great, but it's good enough. And it proves once again that Murphy can do anything - even a PG comedy in which he isn't a donkey.

The stagnant machinery of an accidental voyeur: A 3.0-star vivid but awkward drift through high-tension family embarrassment.2009(3.0)I watched "Meet Dave" in 2009, and it remains a vivid 3.0-star record in my archive—a sensational display of how a "family-friendly" Eddie Murphy vehicle can create a stagnant and pathetic atmosphere of social awkwardness. This experience **** the fourth wall of the attic-cinema vibe by infusing the Captain’s raw, robotic movements into a narrative rhythm that felt 100% mechanical and stagnant. While the production attempted a sensational fish-out-of-water comedy, the presence of my younger sibling made the "vivid" gags about hotdog-eating and bodily functions feel far more pathetic and high-tension than they were meant to be. Seeing the vivid but pathetic struggle of the tiny crew to pilot "Dave" provided a rhythmic sense of amusement, but the emotional payoff was stagnant, leaving me in a state of absolute "hororong" at the sheer awkwardness of the choice. The 95% preservation of my memory is dominated by the stagnant, raw frustration of trying to remain indifferent to the pathetic "bawdy and suggestive" humor while sitting next to a sibling, creating a journey that felt more like a pathetic social gauntlet than a permanent, sensational scar on my soul. Unlike the vivid soul of "Bandslam" or the raw wit of "Burn After Reading," this encounter possessed a rhythm that was far too stagnant to be truly enjoyed. It stands in my 2009 record as a vivid exercise in viewing-party regret—a 3.0-star artifact of rhythmic discomfort that remains a pathetic landmark in my psychological archive.

Eddie Murphy is one of the most alarmingly gifted comic actors America has ever produced but he persists in making comedies that are beneath him.
50
There's no real wit or cleverness to the script.

The insipid gags fail to exploit Murphy's gift for physical humor, Elizabeth Banks and Gabrielle Union are merely decorative, and Ed Helms (The Office), playing a character called #2, looks appropriately constipated.
38
Murphy has fallen back into the comfortable rut of sloppy family comedies that are low on laughs and high on toilet jokes.

After his disastrous outing in 200X with "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," there was no direction for Murphy to head but up in terms of another space alien movie. Indeed, Meet Dave is a step up, but that's only in relation to Pluto Nash.

Despite it's cringe worthy humour and an over the top boring and predictable ending, this family friendly movie is not a total disaster. The acting wasn't too bad, the movie was entertaining for the most part and the plot, although predictable and unoriginal was still interesting enough to keep the viewer at the very least, a little bit interested. All in all, it's not as bad as people say it is, but it's not a good movie either.

This movie isn't really horrible but it's not that great either. The plot is insanely predictable and not really that interesting. Most of the jokes are bland and not that funny, there are a few that caught me off guard and did make me laugh. This is just your standard fish out of water in New York story. Overall this movie isn't anything special and you aren't missing anything if you don't see it but there are far worse movies that you can watch and you wont be to disappointed if you catch it on TV or get it as a cheap rental.

What an embarrassing movie. What a waste of talent. Perhaps it's American humour of some sort, that I don't understand. Maybe it's just for small children. Shame, I love Eddie Murphy. It could have been so much better, the idea was very good.
